I would not want to be Oprah Winfrey’s business manager.  You know the guy or gal that handles the money for the TV icon, writes the checks to keep OWN alive as the cable networks flutters in the water like my 2 year old nephew does when swimming in a pool.

Um he has one of those blow-up life preservers connected to his body just so that more women readers seek to trash me on the internet after blowing them off following a Match.com date.

Yeah the shine is coming off the Queen of Daytime that is now the pauper of cable television.  Not only is her network not performing anywhere near expectations as most of us predicted but she now is having significant issues with her publication O Magazine.

Stats are in and they are not pretty. The newsstand circulation for O Magazine have tanked.  Down some 32% from year to year as the loss of her daytime program have seriously affected sales of the publication.  Interestingly enough this decline was expected by the people who run the magazine.  In a New York Post article O Magazine publisher David Carey said “We new that the turn away from the syndicated show would remove what was in effect the daily promotion of the magazine.”

Yeah but 32%?  Wow!

Oprah’s O Magazine is not alone.  Newsstand sales have dropped some 10% overall over the period which is the future of the magazine and newspaper industry in general.  It’s all about the internet.  Really who reads magazines anymore?

Well it’s about time.  Isn’t this what was supposed to happen once Oprah Winfrey began integrating her personal brand in to the network that bears her name?

Yes.  No question.  But one question and concern that will haunt everyone at OWN for the entire time they work for Oprah Winfrey’s Network.  That question…how healthy is Oprah?

Oprah’s Next Chapter launched on OWN with the highest ratings ever on the network that has failed to find its footing.  A slip on the ice for every minute and every hour of programming until this new show.  Speaking with American Idol’s Steven Tyler about his life and loves, over 1.1 million viewers tuned in tot he premiere episode of the show.

Yaaaay for Oprah.

Now don’t get too excited.  Most network’s can get 1.1 million viewers at midnight on a Saturday night rather than in prime-time on a Sunday night on OWN.  But with Rosie O’Donnell’s show a complete and massive bust, getting the numbers that Oprah brought in this past Sunday is a huge success.

Is Oprah healthy?  Why do I ask that question?  Because OWN will need quality programming content beyond just Oprah Winfrey to make themselves a real, true network.  Yes building a network around such an amazing person seemed like a good idea at the time but that went out the window when the network had as many viewers as passengers on a subway car.

That’s not a lot of people.  And that’s a problem.

But now that Oprah is creating content for her network can she carry it all alone?  Maybe but then comes the health of anyone who will build a TV network around that one person.  What happens when they get run over by a truck?

No matter what this is a huge win for OWN.  They needed it.  But Oprah will have to be the “girl in the plastic bubble” because “danger Will Robinson” will be the phrase of the day if OWN can’t hold its own without “all Oprah all the time” as we used to say in the radio business.

Fans just love themselves some Oprah don’ they?

She can’t do a crossover move like Derrick Rose, the superstar guard for the Chicago Bulls.  Slam dunk like LeBron James?  No one can slam dunk like LeBron.  No one, right?

The only person that can take two of the National Basketball Association’s biggest stars and kick them to the curb is Oprah Winfrey.

The Miami Heat, LeBron’s team and the Chicago Bulls, Derrick’s boys, were scheduled to play game one of the Eastern Conference Championship Tuesday night at the United Center.  Problem for that game.  Oprah Winfrey’s got the United Center booked for one of her last set of shows that day and the NBA has had to adjust the schedule to accommodate, well Oprah Winfrey.

Game one will take place on Sunday rather than Tuesday at the United Center.  The NBA could have asked her to move but no one asks Oprah to do anything these days.  According to the Hollywood Reporter if this had been a concert, the Ice Capades or Glee on tour, the Chicago Bulls would have had no issue moving that event from the United Center.

Yeah, but not Oprah.

Never thought there would ever be a story pitting the National Basketball Association against the Queen of Daytime.  At least next year, the Chicago Bulls won’t have to compete with Oprah Winfrey as she goes full time to the Oprah Winfrey Network.

She was one of the original trashy daytime shows.  I remember watching one episode where Ricki Lake asked a guest, “did he seduce you or did you seduce him?”

The guest responded, and I will spell it as she said it, “I didn’t seduke him he seduked me!”

OK so maybe this show will be different.  No cross-dressers, pregnant women who don’t know who their baby daddy is or lie detector tests for Ricki this time as she gets set to return to the daytime talk show lineup in 2012.

The Ricki Lake Show ran for 11 years on daytime TV and now the producers of the upcoming show say it will be a lot different than her original effort.  “Ricki’s fresh and enhanced perspective” is what one rep from Twentieth Television said in a statement as this show will deal with marriage, family, single mothers, weight loss, you know all of the topics filling the  huge void that develops after Oprah Winfrey leaves her show.

“It has been very fulfilling for the past seven years to focus my energy on advocacy work on behalf of families and children,” Ricki Lake said on her recent efforts.  “Now I’m excited to return to my roots.”

Say what?  No he didn’t!  Yes he did.  Michael Vick, the former maligned dog-fighting football player, turned All American good guy as quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, canceled his appearance with the Queen of Daytime Oprah Winfrey.

Why?

Well his people say that it was for personal reasons.  Vick says he admires Oprah and wants to do the show at some point in the future.

Well you can bet that is not going to happen.  Why Michael Vick even agreed to do the interview in the first place is highly puzzling.  If “his people” were smart, which they seem to have become very quickly after agreeing to the chat that would have aired on February 24, they would make every attempt to get Vick past this horrible episode in his life.

Vick just had an amazing season as the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.  He paid his dues for his conviction doing 18 months in prison.  The chat was to be about his issues with the pups in Virginia, along with his incarceration and work with the Humane Society.

This is why we are going to miss Oprah Winfrey.  Who else would get this interview that aired today on her show?  Yeah, no one.  Ya think Jennifer Hudson is going to call Anderson Cooper to talk about the horrific murder of her family in Chicago back in October of 2008?

No way.  Oprah you will be missed.  Please take some hours over at OWN so that we have some quality in daytime TV.

Please.  We need interviews like today’s with Jennifer Hudson.

That’s what the American Idol and much thinner singer did today on ‘Oprah’ and it was one of those shows that only Oprah could pull off.  Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and 7 year old nephew were violently murdered by the estranged husband of her sister Julia.  He’s been charged with first degree murder in the case.

“It’s a lot to take in,” Hudson told Oprah Winfrey today.  Through tears and anguish Hudson continued, “Did this really happen?  It’s hard to put this in sync with reality.”

Hudson had previously declined to discuss the incident to anyone.  But the ‘Queen of Daytime’ is the first person to get Jennifer to go on record about her reaction to the murders of her family members.
