Teena Marie, the ‘Ivory Queen of Soul’ Passes at 54

OK so she really wasn’t at television personality but showed up a bunch of times at the BET Music Awards and anyone that knows anything about Teena Marie knows this white girl had her place in R & B music.

Teena Marie, a Rick James protege from the disco days and who performed several times on the R & B singer’s albums, has passed away at the age of 54.

Way too young.  For both her and Rick who partied hard like we all did back in the 80′s.

For those of you too young to remember Teena Marie, just Google her.  Then pop a few songs of her’s from iTunes on your iPod.  Right now I’m carrying ‘Ooh Wee’ the hit from her 2006 release ‘Sapphire’ on mine.  Give it a listen and you’ll hear why African Americans accepted her not as a white artist but a white artist that could hang on the R & B charts with a passion.

As a former deejay on radio and doing the mobile gigs to make ends meet, a Teena Marie slow jam was always on my playlist.

She was scheduled for a gig in Atlanta on New Years Day before her death was announced by one of America’s legendary radio stations that play Teena Marie.  WDAS-FM in Philadelphia was one of the first stations to announce that Teena passed away today in Santa Monica, California.
