Spike Lee Takes on Hurricane Katrina Mess One Mo’ Time on HBO
Will this ever go away? Aren’t we tired of hearing about Hurricane Katrina? Can these people in the Gulf just get over all of this?
No!
This mess should never be forgotten. Katrina and the government’s disastrous response. When people say less government the response to Katrina was not what they meant. And Spike’s ‘If God Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise’ looks at the city of New Orleans five years after what was one of the worst mother nature disasters in the history of this country.
I can still see that little black kid saying “we need some help down here” and is one of those segments that was played on the news over and over again to highlight what that city was during those times.

Spike Lee
Expect no relief from Spike Lee in this HBO documentary. Four years ago he gave us a chilling look at the events following Katrina in his ‘When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts.’ This serves to be no different except for a positive insight to the NFL’s New Orleans Saints win in the Super Bowl last year. But don’t expect any breaks anyone as Spike Lee can not only rip the heart out of those he targets but emotionally grab viewers hearts as well.
The filmmaker was denied access to the BP oil disaster cleanup so had not too nice things to say about the events surrounding that area’s second disaster. “BP has been lying from the get-go…BP cut some corners, went around some regulations…11 people died.”
