And the 13 episodes will go in to production this spring and hit the pay cable network in early 2011.  Showtime’s ‘The Tudors’ is working on its final season in the spring of 2010 and this new show will be its replacement.

Set in Italy in 1492, ‘The Borgias’ is a crime drama that follows the antics of a crime family headed by Jeremy Irons character ‘Rodrigo Borgia’ which really reminds you of course of ‘The Sopranos’ on HBO.

Showtime Entertainment President Robert Greenblatt at The Television Critics Association Tour says “we wanted to continue to offer our audience a period drama as wicked, witty and utterly compelling — and that’s what ‘The Borgias’ will be.”

This is Jeremy Irons first regular TV series.  He has won an Academy Award, a Tony Award, two Emmys two Golden and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
