Get Ready to Sit Next to Your Favorite TV Stars, Now Flying Coach

Yes you could be sitting next to an A list personality the next time you fly to Vancouver or Toronto, where a lot of TV shows are produced.  Wouldn’t you like to sit next to a star on ‘Hawaii Five-0′ or ‘NCTS?’

airline-seatingOK so those shows aren’t filmed in those two Canadian locations but with the new contract just negotiated with the unions representing TV and film actors, top celebrities will be flying coach for distances under 1,000 miles.  So let’s say a performer is flying from Los Angeles to Vancouver or from New York City to Toronto, they’ll have to go to Expedia and buy a ticket just like the rest of us.

The expiring contract guaranteed First Class travel but that’s a perk that is no longer good for production companies that are looking to cut costs for creating these shows.  Travel is expensive.  Could be a difference of thousands of dollars in savings for the producers of network show.

Some actors can still negotiate First Class travel if they want and you can expect most that don’t get to sit up front will just pay for the upgrade of a ticket.  But First Class is no longer part of the collective bargaining agreement with SAG (the Studio Artists Guild) or AFTRA (the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) which now brings this so called elite group of travelers in line with the rest of the world.

Remember when we could, for business travel, could fly anywhere, First Class?  Those days are long gone.
