20 Years Later, the Los Angeles Lakers’ Magic Johnson’s ‘The Announcement’ a Documentary on ESPN (YouTube Video)
It was one of those days most of us will never forget. Never. Magic Johnson was a superstar in the National Basketball Association. He was King of the NBA hill. Living and living Los Angeles was his life. The parties, the women, the men and women along with a lifestyle that was extremely dangerous yet we all thought that the AIDS virus was something that gay men got as a reminder of their illicit activities.
Nope.
This was one of the first indications of how the AIDS virus was ready to take hold of the heterosexual community as well as those in the gay male community. Being on the ‘down-low’ and on and on just proved a lot. When Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers made The Announcement we were all stunned. And confused.
It took a while to get over the shock. Then reality. One of America’s most well know sports personalities was going to die of AIDS.
20 years later, Magic Johnson is still healthy, alive and living with AIDS. God bless him and the new medical breakthroughs that have allowed him and others infected with the virus to live long lives.
ESPN presents The Announcement. A look at that terrible day by the people who were around Magic Johnson when he made, well, The Announcement. It was November 7th, 1991 when he made The Announcement and that will be the focus of the ESPN documentary that will air on that network beginning March 11th.
20 years ago this writer was 35 years old. And I will never forget that day. That day when your personal world of sports in the NBA and the personal world of dating in the 90′s changed so quickly. This writer will never forget that day.
