Real TV Critics

This is not going to look good on his resume.  You know the one he’s working on right now as his career heads out the door like embarrassed New York City Congressman.  Yeah this is not breaking news.  But after working for so many years at CBS, I expected nothing less from NBC.

At least Chris Hansen still has a job.  For now.

The New York Post is reporting that the host of the now defunct To Catch a Predator on NBC is getting stiffed on a promotion as lead host for the network’s news-magazine Dateline.  Chris Hansen got his brand caught up in a sex scandal with an TV news reporter in West Palm Beach as the National Enquirer was rolling the video-tape of him walking into a hotel with the woman.

Oh yeah, Chris Hansen is, for now married and a father of two.

Not a good career move.  Take it from someone that knows that when you think with your significant other head on the male domain you for all intents and purposes limit the growth of your broadcast career.

Um, I heard that’s what happens.  Nothing like that ever happened to me at CBS.  No not me.  “I did not have sex with that woman….”

OK I digress.

Chris Hansen was headed to be the host of Dateline as Ann Curry moved over to the Today Show full time taking over for Meredith Vieira.  That would have been a promotion.  Seems that promotion ain’t gonna happen and this sex scandal is the reason behind NBC taking the position away from Chris Hansen.

NBC is denying the report from the New York Post.  But one unnamed source quoted in the story said NBC and Comcast “don’t like this type of scandal one bit.”

It’s not only about the newspaper the News of the World which is owned by media mogul and FOX TV Network big boss Rupert Murdoch.  It’s now all about the NYPD, as in the New York city men in blue, which now is under investigation for their part in this mess.

It’s called hacking.  And the News of the World is now in the canceled bin after being involved in gaining access to the telephone information of persons it targeted for stories in the newspaper.  Now a report from a New York says the News of the World even contacted a New York city police detective looking for the telephone numbers of 9/11 victims to hack in to their voice mails and additional data.

Rupert Murdoch’s media empire is in a huge mess.  You don’t mess around with anything connected to the 9/11 tragedy which took thousands of lives in New York.  You just don’t do it.

Not only are police authorities in London investigating the hacking incident in that city, the government in that country is heavily involved in the issue as well.  With the U.S. involvement now with the New York Police Department, you can bet the Justice Department here will get involved as well.  And that’s not good for the Murdoch empire which includes the FOX Television Network and FOX News.

In other words with a Democratic President going after FOX and everything connected to FOX News would be like the fat kid and a piece of chocolate cake.

This is huge news and a big blister for Rupert Murdoch.  There are lots of people who don’t like the guy.  And taking his empire down which includes FOX News may just be the opening for everyone that would like to see the guy get his due.

Getting illegally connected to any 9/11 related could destroy the image of FOX in the United States for a lot of people who watch the network, read Murdoch’s news papers including the Wall Street Journal and every FOX connected media property.

Not a good way to start the day for Rupert Murdoch, not a good way to start the day.

OK I know there are a lot of Mom’s that read my blog as I see them on my Twitter account.  And I hope they don’t drop off because of this story and what I’m about to say.  So let me say it first.

Your kids are not cute to anyone else but you on a plane.  Let me repeat, your kids are only cute to you when 300 people are stuffed in a plane flying 26,000 feet in the air with stinky, germ filled bathrooms, seats that have been on planes since Pan Am days and relatively rude, under-paid flight attendants.

The last thing any passenger needs is that one parent that thinks it’s OK for their kids to be trolling the aisle of a plane, believing that everyone on the plane thinks that their kid is cute.

Take if from someone that used to do 100,000 miles a year on US Air.  Stop thinking that, please.

So then comes Octomom Nadya Suleman and her kids.  Yeah you know the ones that terrorized the Today Show last week in one of her twisted interviews.  So we all know that this woman is a flipping nut but according to TMZ.com Suleman was on a plane returning to her wonderful life here in California and her kids were just as out of control on the plane as they were on the Today Show.  Not you gotta give her a bit of a break.  Kids are going to make noise and be out of control but at a certain age and the right mother, discipline should be administered.

Especially on a plane.  But they’re only two year old, right?  But there are eight of them.

Her kids were in terror mode when 3rd Rock from The Sun’s Kristen Johnston asked her to control her brood.  She told Octomom to “keep it down” during the flight.  Suleman shouted back “How would you like me to keep two eight two year-olds quiet.”

Fair question.

Um, I have an answer.  Maybe not have eight of them?

Johnston piped back “Get more help” where I reply that her response was much better than mine since the kids are already on the planet.  But I used to run a comedy club so I’m sticking to my answer.

But wait there’s more from Nadya.

According to TMZ.com Suleman shouted “Why don’t you grow a baby and get a life.”

Oh this woman, this woman Nadya Suleman is one certified whack.

This all coming from a report from CNBC.  We were all waiting for Shaq’s next move and joining one of the two lead networks covering the National Basketball Association broadcasts was top on the list for him.  And both ABC/ESPN and TNT.  He probably is the biggest grab for TNT as the report says Shaq will join analysts Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith for the upcoming NBA season.

Of course if there’s an NBA season as the league has currently no working agreement with its players.

Chris Webber, who was part of the broadcasts this past season, is out of a gig at TNT with the upcoming Shaq announcement.  According to Darren Rovell over at CNBC, the team of Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley will always be in place at TNT and their NBA coverage.  So don’t expect Chris Webber to ask Shaq over for Thanksgiving dinner this year.

Last night the promo at the end of Friday Night Lights said next week’s show would be the final episode of the series for the great show.  I have to say I’m going to either pick up DVD copies of the full series run or grab what I can online or on Netflix.

Friday Night Lights is another one of those shows where you just say it’s the end of the world as we are left with Snookie and Dancing with The Monkees or whatever crap reality shows are on television.  But you can’t beat such quality as in Friday Night Lights.

After five seasons running on NBC and on DirecTV’s 101 network, Friday Night Lights will turn down the lights next Friday on a great cast and a solid look at high school football in the state of Texas,  Football is so big in Texas that ESPN will be devoting a sports network just to cover the state’s football frenzy.  And the cast of the terrific Kyle Chandler and the amazing work of Connie Britton made the show one of the most critically acclaimed programs combining drama and sports.

In addition to great television, Friday Night Lights was one of the most extremely diverse casts on television.  Chandler’s coach Friday Night Lights coached the East Dillon Lions which was set in a largely African American community and story-lines of racism and personal issues as abortion were consistent topics in the series.

This show will be missed.  Like a lot of really quality television.  The loss of Friday Night Lights enhances the low level f class on current TV.  I can’t wait to get to the episodes I’ve missed over its run since 2006.

OK you know I HAVE to write about this story because the British are coming, the British are coming and for me the couple is literally right down the street from my office and home.  It’s an area called Hancock Park, a walk away from the Koreatown/Mid-Wilshire area which is more famously known for the well publicized boxing match between Chris Brown and Rihanna.

Now Prince William and Kate are in town.  Hanging out at the British Prime Minister’s home in Hancock Park in the really upscale section of Los Angeles that most people don’t know.  Yeah there’s Beverly Hills and Bel Air but then there’s Hancock Park.

I have to admit though I may live and work close but that’s about it.  My hood is the ghetto compared to where they are staying.

But the royal couple is in town.  The city is on fire right now.  Traffic is and was a mess when they arrived yesterday.  The paparazzi, well they’ve been told by the Los Angeles Police Department that they’d better think twice about trying to get the money shot.  No climbing on trees outside the PM’s residence.  Cops even have signed statements from adjoining property owners to make immediate arrests of any photographer who trespasses on a neighbor’s home to get good photos.

In other words President Obama doesn’t get this kind of activity.  OK  maybe he does but this is simply crazy.

It’s all over network news, local TV is covering it like the wedding between the Prince and Kate.  Her first visit ever to the United States.

Yeah what a mess.

But I have to admit, it’s kinda fun.  It really is.  Guess it’s because it’s in my neighborhood.  Most times guys could give a rats behind about this kind of activity.  Women love it.  All over it.  So we just endure.

OK so I will be watching Larry Crowne at a movie with a friend some 30 some miles away early evening.  Far from the maddening crowd of Hollywood.  My invite to the big events must have gotten lost in the mail. But it is a fun time for Los Angeles.

This is one of those awful stories that could change how baseball deals with players throwing balls to fans attending games at any level.  And there’s one outfielder for the Texas Rangers that will never forget his participation in the tossing of a foul ball that took the life of a fan who fell to his death reaching for that ball.

This is a tough one to watch, no doubt.  But we show it not because of the sensational aspect of this video.  We show it because one of two things will happen in major league and all of baseball.  Players will never throw another ball in the stands or professional baseball will do a better job in keeping there fans more safe when seated in high places at baseball stadiums.

This happened right in front of his son.  An awful event and story.

The Jerry Springer Show is denying it but a report is flying around low end TV land that there’s a $1 million dollar offer on the table for Casey Anthony to appear on the show with one catch.  That is her parents have to appear with her along with her brother.

Can you say where do I sign up if your name is Casey Anthony?

Casey Anthony was found not guilty of murdering her daughter Caylee earlier this week and is set to be released next weekend in to a world that despises her, her family and anything connected to the future party girl.  But the fact that she’s broke and could use a few bucks makes this a pretty low end offer.

The Jerry Springer Show is denying the offer and report which came from RadarOnline.com but if there’s any show that fits this family and Casey Anthony it certainly is The Jerry Springer Show.

Most know that Jerry Springer’s program is for trailer trash, ghetto garbage, cross-dressers who admit to boyfriends that they are too men and fathers that sleep with their daughters along with hookers who get beat up by their pimps.

Need any more to see why this is Casey Anthony territory?

This one is going to be one for the television record books.  If this isn’t an example of innocence shattered in a way that is so overexposed in the media, you name another historic television moment.

There truly will be not one dry eye in the world on Sunday starting at 9PM on ABC.  Diane Sawyer will get the first television interview with kidnapped victim Jaycee Dugard, missing and then found after 18 years.  Her kidnappers have been sentenced to prison time but the damage to this woman will take many years to settle.  From an ABC News press release “Dugard will be asked about the extraordinary and heartbreaking story of her captivity, her reunion with her family” during the 2 hour interview with Ms. Sawyer.

Jaycee Dugard is doing this interview in conjunction with the release of the Simon and Schuster published book A Stolen Life that hits store shelves next month.

Dugard was kidnapped at age 11 by Philip and Nancy Garrido and underwent sexual and psychological abuse from the pair for 18 years.  Once again, nothing more to say that innocence shattered.

If this story doesn’t get parents to keep a close eye on their kids then forget the story and watch the ABC News interview.

OK so Jean Smart’s Governor Pat Jameson got offed in the last episode of Hawaii Five O in a one on one with Wo Fat.  And Steve McGarrett’s team is coming apart in the CBS series Hawaii Five O so the season opener will be filled with drama and a new Governor replacing the gunned down, corrupt Governor Jameson.

And it’s so perfect timing to add some additional eye candy to the series in the name of Richard T. Jones who joins the cast of the best new show on television.  His job as the new Governor is to keep a close eye on McGarrett and his team of detectives and will recur in the upcoming second season of Hawaii Five O.

Jones recently hit in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles television program and has done guest shots on Grey’s Anatomy, Bones and had a significant role in the movie Why Did I Get Married Too.
