Real TV Critics

Not sure which pollster came up with that figure but Tim Tebow has a lot of people buying his act.  A lot of people.  Yeah it was actually fun to watch and even some of us who really didn’t believe that God was the 12th man on the football field with Tim Tebow’s Denver Broncos, some of us tortured Catholics were really looking skyward to avoid the lighting strike if it was about to come to us non-believers.

But yes, 46% of people surveyed by some group found them thinking that God played for the Denver Bronco and dissed the other team across from them on the football field.

Then came Tom Brady.  Tom Brady.  The quarterback for the New England Patriots which still without question the best football team as an organization in all of sports.

Tom Brady…the new coming of Jesus Christ.

God showed up in Foxboro over the weekend.  So did Tom Brady , the new Son of God.  “I am the Lord thy God,” said Tom Brady and the New England defense that did pretty much everything in the playbook to annihilate the Denver Broncos 45 to 10 in an AFC Playoff football game.

This actually is a good thing for Tim Tebow.  As much as many fans of the rookie quarterback like his antics on and off the field, if he had gone on to win the SuperBowl that 46% would have been around 96%.

Can you blame anyone for agreeing that God would be on Tim’s side with that much success.

Now with Tim Tebow now gone, we present the Jimmy Kimmel send off to the Denver Quarterback and look forward to next year.  Let’s hope he stays Tim Tebow and not Mark Sanchez.

So the open to all TV shows is the most important part of any program.  The expectation of genius from Ricky Gervais that we all expected last night never really materialized.  Nothing to out of the ordinary except for the grilling he gave Jodie Foster at the open of the show.

Ricky Gervais is one funny dude.  But you gotta believe that he was pinned down by the peeps that run the Golden Globes but still he was adequate.

This is another good one.  I may have had Mentos once in my entire life.  And at this current age there’s no way on the big guy’s good earth that I would ever let a commercial sway me in any way because eating any candy is a no no according to my Roberston Boulevard doctor.

But a good commercial is a good commercial and there are a few running that will get my attention and you will like.

Check out the Mentos The Spider commercial below.  And for the official record I dig any commercial that has a call to action that does more than ask you to buy the seller’s products.  You won’t see it on this commercial but the one running on the NFL Playoff games on CBS and FOX sell the Spider Swiper App on the back end of the 30 second spot.

Great “creative” as they call it on Madison Avenue, Mad Men or the advertising business for those of you not in the business.  Though the most annoying thing is the girl’s scream which is too real for me as it reminds me of the aftermath of a Saturday night date.

AMC had no choice.  Give thanks fans to Jon Hamm one of the stars on the TV series Mad Men.  He was the culprit or more simply put the man who gave away the launch of Mad Men as a return series on AMC via a mention on a recent podcast.  And fans have been waiting.  The behind the scenes mess seems to have ended and let the games begin as Mad Men seeks to return to AMC on March 25th.

It will be a two hour premiere on AMC for Mad Men and the cable channel also says one of my favorites that I just grabbed on to will return on April 1st.  That’s the premiere of The Killing on AMC which will give us fans a two hour beginning to its second season as well.

Jon Ham gave the start date for Mad Men its first timetable when he appeared on Doug Love Movies, a podcast that aired this past Friday.  In conversation with Doug Benson, Hamm dropped the date for the show’s fifth season start and said nothing more noting that he may have crossed the line in the giveaway.  Or just a smart PR move, whatever you want to title his comment.

Jon Hamm will get his first shot at direction of content in the series that went in to production on July 5th.

There are commercials and there are commercials for cable television versus satellite.  This is one real funny commercial that is just airing on pay TV as DirecTV starts a new ad campaign for their service as you will just laugh your backside off at this one.

You gotta love DirecTV just in general.  Cable television has some significant issues as I’ve had both services over the years and the satellite service is supreme compared to cable.  Although I must say it’s been a few months since Time Warner has crashed completely leaving me without my Judge Mathis or The Maury Show episodes.

But this commercial is absolutely classic.

Oh I could talk about Work It on ABC TV that I’m watching right now.  So far the first minute of this week’s episode is clearly about to make me wonder, as I always say, who the heck greenlights this crap.

Work It sucks.  Sucks.

OK so I asked the question and now I can move on to real important things.

I dig Paula Deen.  That southern drawl, her love for the food that comes from that region of the country and she just seems like a pretty cool person when I watch her content on NBC’s Today Show.

That’s all in the past.  Because there’s nothing more serious about where Paula Deen’s life is today and how she will have to adjust her whole way of life as Paula Deen is about to admit to the world that she has Type 2 diabetes.

So let’s get back to the high fat, high cholesterol, high in everything not good for the American diet that Paula Dean cooks regularly that has led to the 64 year old chef’s current condition that has the drug-maker of the pill Novartis bring her on as a spokesperson to help combat diabetes.  A Novartis rep says no deal is in place but others say there’s a million dollar contract on the table for her to push the drug.

Hey…maybe there’s a better fix.  How about not selling us the high fat, high cholesterol, high in everything food that she promotes on shows like Today?

How about that?

Diabetes is a direct cause for death.  Period.  Bad diet, too many carbohydrates, too many desserts, not enough exercise and like this writer’s former sedentary lifestyle that pushed him to the very close brink of diabetes.

Yes, my doctor told me several years back that it’s time to keep a close eye on my consumption of all foods or I would be the next person on the list to be called a diabetic.

Cut back the carbs, the sugar, a little bit on the expensive scotch and processed foods led me from 222 pounds to 190 with an anchor as radio music program directors say when a song is dropping off the Pop Tart charts.

Paula Deen, no matter what she does to confirm or deny the diabetes story, should take a few lessons form her son Bobby.  He’s got a new program on Cooking Channel that focuses on southern meals that you can enjoy with less fat and the mess that causes diabetes.

You never see Bobby Deen on the Today Show though, do you?  Only mama Paula Deen feeding viewers more fat crap.

America has simply become obese country.  It’s huge.  Huge.  And the only way television solves this problem is by offering the right content to help combat obesity which is a cause of diabetes.  Not content that kills people.  Which Paula Deen’s content surely does.

Oh and once again Work It really sucks.

OK so I gotta have fun with this one.  I get to write the script for The Maury Show, you know one of those paternity episodes where half the women need to test a lift of guys you can count on both hands to determine who matched the baby’s DNA.

You know I gotta be straight with you.  Will do this before I get to Khloe Kardashian Odom and the story that’s buzzing all around the internet about whether she’s the daughter of famed attorney Robert Kardashian.

Condom makers are in big business these days.  Because in certain parts of the country, people are just sleeping with every Tom, Dick and Hakeem if you have questions about the paternity of your own children.  I saw this woman on Maury who claimed that all three of her children were her husband’s and it turned out that none of them were.

How the heck…..?

Anyway in the words of Maury “This is Kris.  Kris is going all over television and the internet telling everyone that Robert Kardashian, the lawyer most known for getting O.J. Simpson off for a murder he committed, that he is the father of  reality show star Khloe Kardashian Odom.”

Remember this is Maury speaking.  You know I don’t call these reality people stars.  OK back to Maury.

“Kris is here today to find out if her daughter Khloe is the daughter of Robert Kardashian.  Now the dead man’s ex-wife and widow claimed on his deathbed that he was not the father of her kid Khloe.  This has the whole family up in arms.  But today we’re going to find out if Robert Kardashian is or is not the biological father of Khloe Kardashian.”

What a reality mess.  Or should we say a real mess.

“I never heard such crap in my life,” said Kris Jenner on Good Morning America.  “I gave birth.  I know who the dad was.”

Yeah they say that all the time on The Maury Show.

Here’s the thing and why Maury must be involved.  Because both sides in this reality controversy are sticking to their stories.

Now this is true life Hollywood.

Melrose Place star Heather Locklear has been hospitalized at Las Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks outside Los Angeles after the actress took a dangerous dose of prescription drugs and alcohol.  Her sister called the police earlier today and told  them to get help to her home in Westlake Village and medics took her to the hospital to be be treated.

As of this writing there is no word on her condition.  And this is not the first time she’s been in this status as several years ago Heather Locklear’s doctor called authorities in 2008 to report that the actress took prescription drugs in an apparent suicide attempt.  First responders went to her residence and found her to be OK and her publicist said she did not need medical assistance.  But Heather Locklear did check herself in to a medical facility for psychological reasons later that year.  Once again the publicist spoke saying that she was suffering from anxiety and depression.

Locklear recently broke off her engagement with Jack Wagner.  And the photo courtesy TMZ.com shows her at the Los Angeles Lakers game getting her drink on with a friend.

What a mess.

If you haven’t watched Castle on Monday nights on ABC Television you are missing one of TV’s top quality programs.  Castle is one of the most engaging crime drama concepts with a great cast and some incredible writing.  For those of you who haven’t watched, well you should.  Nathan Fillion stars as Richard Castle, a writer who immerses himself in the New York City Police Department after a serial killer does his work based on his novels.

Fillion is so solid in the role of Castle that the show, while a crime drama, is really fun to watch and the sexual tension between him and his detective partner Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) is superb.

I just got in to the show this past season as a regular watcher.  Castle is simply fantastic.

Nathan Fillion has found a great full time role in Castle.  And those of you who watched him in his biggest role in the TV series Firefly or his short time on One Life to Live will like his blast from the past interview with Parade Magazine.

It’s a short story but getting to know the show as a new watcher is a pleasure.  Top quality television is Castle.
