What’s a K-Pop VJ? So We Answer, Chat About an ‘Mnet’ Audition (Videos)

August 6th, 2011 No comments

Yeah so we’re searching around the web for some cool stories and we found one.  Never did I ever think I would find something to write on this blog that would really connect me to the Koreatown section of Los Angeles.  It’s where I live and work by the way and I gotta tell you that after having four previous living spaces in LA, Koreatown has been the best choice.

So I see this audition listing on Cynopsis, one of my media rags I get everyday for a K-Pop VJ.  And I wondered aloud, “what the hell if a K-Pop VJ?”

Fast forward to this audition where Mnet, a 24 hour English language network which focuses on Asian culture is doing a search for a K-Pop VJ to host a two hour show featuring ‘K-Pop’ artists.

How cool is this?

'K-Pop' Artist Hyori Lee

And anyone that is in to ‘K-Pop’ can enter the audition search.  But you will have to speak English during the two hours so most people who live in my neighborhood might not qualify.

You know living in a building where everyone speaks Korean and no one speaks English can be really good.  That way I don’t have to chat with my neighbors.

So I’m going to give you an e-mail address to apply in a minute but your video can’t be any longer than five minutes, you gotta give your name, rank and serial number as in all personal information, mention your favorite ‘K-Pop’ artists and do a song and dance routine from one of those performers.

Geez, these people at Mnet want a  lot!

You gotta have all in place by August 12th to the e-mail address below.  This actually seems fun.  Here’s the contact info.  And also a link to some ‘K-Pop’ artists.

Biggest Drop in Cable, Satellite Viewing Purchases Come from Where? You’re Kidding!

August 5th, 2011 No comments

OK so if someone, anyone asked me this question, I would never be able to name the one area of TV purchases in cable and satellite that are on a serious decline.  I might say ordering Pay Per View events, sports or concerts.  Maybe cutting back on NBA League Pass or the Major League Baseball package that gets you every game in that professional game, yes maybe there.  I might even say On Demand, you  know where you have to buy movies and TV shows.

But there clearly is a recession going on in America because the Wall Street Journal is reporting that cable and satellite broadcasters are confused about the serious drop in the purchase of adult movies on their outlets.

Yes, porn video purchases are dropping faster than a Charlie Sheen hotel guest as the industry is suffering big time with the drop of sales of the content.  People just aren’t watching it anymore.

Are you kidding?

Nope says the Wall Street Journal.

OK so let’s peep this.  Because of the recession, a research study released recently said we weren’t having what I will term significant physical contact with the opposite sex and now we’re not even watching porn anymore?  So no sex and no porn.  I blame it on President Obama.

Seems it customary to blame everything on President Obama.

Check out this graph…

Porn is dying in America according the Wall Street Journal report.  They call it shrinkage in the cable and satellite business and that’s no pun intended, ha!  I crack myself up, and there’s another funny.

Best to read the article at WSJ.com because I’m getting a bit frisky now.  But buying porn on cable and satellite is a huge moneymaker and it’s going away.

One word to describe this and that word is DAMN!!!

In a Call of Need, Media Responding, Now Richard Engel to Somalia

August 5th, 2011 No comments

Read the story below.  About the mess going on in Somalia.  Almost 30,000 children have died in the outbreak of violence and famine in that country and finally news organizations in this country are waking up and responding.  Now NBC News has dispatched their top foreign correspondent Richard Engel to the region to cover the ongoing story.

We reported earlier this week that only ABC News had a major network reporter in Somalia reporting on the devastation.  CNN on the cable side with Nina Elbagar but the coverage has been so weak that even UNICEF has complained.  The lack of media content coming from Somalia has diminished donations to the group as the goal or reaching $300 million is extremely out of reach with only $5 million on the books.

Richard Engel is clearly no rookie when it comes to covering news stories in violent areas of the world with his work in the Middle East.  He’s worked with NBC and ABC covering the region.

Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon Disses Jerry Lewis

August 4th, 2011 No comments

So this is an annual event.  Watching at least a few minutes of the Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon and the great Jerry Lewis host the event every year.  The old guy at 85 years young has hosted this television program since I was a kid and you always expect to see Jerry Lewis as part of this event.

No more pal.

Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon

Jerry Lewis retired as host of the Telethon after 44 years as host of the program and with a complete restructuring of the show, taking it to just six hours of broadcast time, Jerry Lewis is officially out.

And it wasn’t his calling.  He announced back in mid-May that he would return to the show to end with his signature song You’ll Never Walk Alone.  And now that’s not even going to happen.  Back then he said “I’ll never desert MDA and my kids.  Guess at this point the decision is no longer up to Jerry Lewis.

He’s now officially off the program completely.  He will remain the national chairman of the MDA but “he will not be appearing on the Telethon” says R. Rodney Howell, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the group.

I know Jerry Lewis has pretty much ticked off everybody in the television business with his recent comments about reality TV but remember he’s an old, crabby man.   Give the old guy a break.

August 4th, 2011 No comments

Big changes coming for girl about town, master of no one gig in the entertainment business woman Maria Menounos.  The gal from Medford, Massachusetts has come a long way in her short career and now it’s about to get even bigger.

Oh, by the way, those of us who lived or worked in Boston, it’s ‘med-fuh’ and Medford, Massachusetts.

First Laurence Fishburne, Now Marg Helgenberger Leaving ‘CSI’

August 4th, 2011 No comments

The demise of the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation continues.  First the big name of William Petersen in his role as Gil Grissom departs.  He’s replaced by Laurence Fishburne who left this past season.  Now a huge cast change once again as Marg Helgenberger is hitting the road as well announcing that this season will be her last on the CBS show.

Marg Helgenberger, 'CSI'

With ratings in constant decline, the show has lost its sizzle and no one wants to be on a sinking ship which seems to be the case for CSI.  Still holding the top spot as the world’s most watched program, the departure of Petersen has sent the show spiraling downward over the last several years bringing in some of the lowest viewer numbers ever in the history of CSI.

“I’ve been itching to get back on stage,” said Helgenberger told EOnline.  But “they’ve left the door open for me” should she want to return to the series.

Ted Danson will join the CSI team this fall replacing Laurence Fishburne.

Violence, Famine in Mogadishu, Only One American Reporter from ABC

August 3rd, 2011 No comments

Maybe it’s because we’ve had our own problems here in the United States over the past couple of months with the debt ceiling debate which was more like a episode of The Flintstones that this story has been pushed aside.  You gotta admit that reporters from all over the globe were dug in at a very hot Washington, DC covering that mess.  But to have only one major news organization with a person on ground in the African country of Somalia seems a bit strange.  With the starvation going on there and the ongoing violence in Mogadishu, Somalia you would think that more representation than ABC’s David Muir would be appropriate.

Seems not.

David Muir, along with his news partners at ABC, say their organization is the only one with an American reporter now covering the deadly situation in that country.  Hopefully that will change.  Especially after David Muir described the ongoing situation as “the worst famine in a generation.”

Wake up America.  We have a problem.

UNICEF is on a mission to raise $300 million to help in the difficult situation in Mogadishu and with little or no news media coverage the organization has only $5 million toward their goal.

And another reason why this is an important struggle, one that affects America directly?  The Al Shabab is a group linked directly to Al Quaeda is successfully preventing aid to get to those individuals affected by this conflict.

Just for the record and at least a minor attempt to help, the link to UNICEF and information on this struggle is below.

An Amazing Trailer for Borderline Personality Disorder, ‘Brandon Marshall: Borderline Beast’

August 3rd, 2011 No comments

This one will surely scare you.  If you follow sports at any level you’ve read the story about Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall who came clean recently about the cause of some of his off field issues.  He’s been arrested for domestic violence charges which were eventually dismissed, had a DUI beef that was dropped to a lesser count and was with teammate Darrent Williams when he was murdered, some saying Marshall was the intended target during that incident.

Now this.

Brandon Marshall, Miami Dolphins Wide Receiver

Brandon Marshall has been diagnosed with BPD, commonly known as Borderline Personality Disorder, and is coming so far out with his condition that there’s a documentary in the works about the battle to defeat the issue.   Brandon Marshall: Borderline Beast will detail the ups and downs of the football player that played in two Pro Bowls and had three consecutive 100 catch seasons in the NFL.  But is more known for his off field problems than his football talent.

“I appreciate the way he is handling it, because most people wouldn’t do it that way,” said former teammate and Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey in conversation with The Denver Post. “I just hope he can get help.”

“I think it will bring more attention to it,” said Broncos wide receive Eddie Royal in the same Post article.  Marshall would like to become the spokesperson for BPD which symptoms include impulsive aggression, anger, anxiety and deep depression.

“Brandon is a great guy, I wish him the best,” said Royal.

Watch this trailer.  It’s one of the best I’ve seen in a long while.

“We’re very serious,” Say Producer on Updated Big Screen ‘Friday Night Lights’

August 3rd, 2011 No comments

We knew this show wasn’t finished, for all of us who are fans of the much heralded television series Friday Night Lights.  Yes they’ve talked about the film version of Entourage and the on and off again chatting on about FOX’s 24.  But now there’s some serious buzz going around Hollywood about the possible coming of the big screen version of one of television’s best programs of quality, Friday Night Lights.

'Friday Night Lights' - "Don't Go" - Connie Britton as Tami Taylor, Kyle Chandler as Coach Eric Taylor

'Friday Night Lights' - "Don't Go" - Connie Britton as Tami Taylor, Kyle Chandler as Coach Eric Taylor

Last we left show stars Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton were in Philly after the East Dillon Lions were merged with a crosstown rival high school and Coach Taylor and his wife Tami relocated to the city of Brotherly Love.  That being Philadelphia after she received a big time offer from a university in that city.  And Coach Taylor, after much consideration, decided to tag along with Tami and make the move.

The End.  At least for television and at least for now.

“We’re very serious about trying to do it,” said Peter Berg the show’s executive producer and also the director of the TV show’s 2004 film.  And Friday Night Lights, the television show, has been nominated 37 times for Emmys since it first hit the air in 2006.

One of Television’s Greatest Moments, the Return of Gabby Giffords (Video)

August 2nd, 2011 No comments

“It was a gesture that moved the world,” said Lee Cowan on his report during NBC Nightly News this evening.  After dealing with the debt crisis as Americans, there was not one politician in Washington that we really considered a good human being.  But then there was Gabby Giffords, the Congresswoman from Arizona who was shot in the head by a whack job and none of use expected to survive.  Well she sure did survive.  And last night she showed up to vote in the affirmative for the raising of the debt ceiling that has engrossed all of us for a few weeks, even months now.

Gabby Giffords

Gabby Giffords

You know this would not have been a good time for Americans during the crap these assholes in Washington put us through and we’re pretty much royally pissed.  Really pissed at these politicians.  We think they are worthless, overpaid losers, yes we do.  But when Gabrielle Giffords walked on to the floor of Congress last night you just had a sense of easiness and finality that the mess was over.  And we all could, at least for a moment, appreciate a fighter and Gabby Giffords is a fighter.

If there’s one politician we all pulled for it was this Congresswoman.  Yes we all hate politicians and I could go on forever about their limited value, yet unfortunately this is what America voted for and put in to office.  But out of all of this, there was good news and that is every person on the floor of Congress came together to stand up and cheer for Gabby Giffords.
