Cedric ‘The Entertainer’ Finds “It’s Worth What?”

June 8th, 2011 No comments

One thing we know.  We know Cedric ‘The Entertainer’ is really funny.  For you old school comedy followers during the HBO Def Jam period back in the 90′s, Cedric ‘The Entertainer’ was part of the very successful comedy tour The Original Kings of Comedy that launched the careers of some great African American comedians.  Including Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley and the late, great Bernie Mac.

Now comes a new summer game show for Cedric ‘The Entertainer’ on NBC.  Don’t really get it but quoting directly from an NBC press release on It’s Worth What?.

Cedric "The Entertainer"

“A game show that taps into America’s curiosity for cost and value, from the hidden gems found in one’s attic to some of the most exotic valuables from around the globe. A pair of contestants are taken through a series of challenges that escalate in level of difficulty, tasking the contestants with discerning the price of the items in each round. If they successfully complete the challenges, contestants can win up to $1 million.”

Huh?

And that’s all folks.  Nothing else but a lot of psychobabble about the producers, their credits, there are no videos yet but this one does not have a lot of foundation yet but what else would you expect from a summer replacement show, right?

It’s Worth What? premieres on NBC on July 12.

Laurence Fishburne’s ‘Dr. Ray Langston’ Leaving ‘CSI’

June 8th, 2011 No comments

It’s hard to replace a legendary television personality that William Petersen created during his time on the original CSI.  Laurence Fishburne was chosen over two years ago to fill some big shoes on CSI but there is only one Gil Grissom.  And with the ratings decline over the past several years, this anchor of the CSI trilogy is in critical condition and may be headed to the morgue.

Or at least to Wednesday nights on CBS.

Now comes word from the Hollywood Reporter that Laurence Fishburne’s days at the lead on the series is coming to an end.  The Emmy winning actor has decided not to renew his contract with CSI for another season and leave the drama which he began as Dr. Ray Langston in 2008.

Lawrence Fishburne and William Petersen

Will William Petersen return from exile, or should we say from behind the scenes, and reprise his role as Dr. Gil Grissom?  No word on whether CSI producers have those plans but that may be a way to save what’s left of the show.  It still has great foundation but now in double digits in years airing on CBS it may be just life in the real world of television and time for a decline in viewers.  William Petersen, Laurence Fishburne or anyone may never be able to bring this show back to its glory.

Still it’s a solid series from writing and production.

FX Grabs Rights to ‘X-Men: First Class’ and ‘The Hangover II’ (Videos)

June 7th, 2011 No comments

More movie rights snatched by FX one more time.  The cable channel snatched the rights to X-Men: First Class which took in over $55 million in its first week in the theaters last weekend which means it’s as blockbuster film at the box office.

James McAvoy - "X-Men: First Class" New York City Premiere

James McAvoy - "X-Men: First Class" New York City Premiere

Yeah that’s one you want on your roster for airing the first network television broadcast when those rights fall in place for FX.

But wait there’s more.  The Hangover II, which most people saying that it’s nothing more that a ripoff of the first segment of the original, is getting its first TV run on FX as well.  Some say it’s really not that funny while others disagree.  But just getting the name to promote and market on the cable channel will provide a massive numbers of viewers on FX.

Bradley Cooper - "The Hangover Part II" Los Angeles Premiere

And even more for FX that we didn’t write about earlier but are prime for keeping the network solid for men 18 to 34 years of age including the rights to the Spider-Man series of movies along with Fantastic Four, Wolverine, Tron: Legacy, The Roommate and one of the coolest movies Battle: Los Angeles.

Is this a guy network, that FX, or what.

Sexy Secret Agent ‘Annie Walker’ Via Piper Perabo Back in ‘Covert Affairs’ (Videos)

June 7th, 2011 No comments

So thank you, USA Network web-site officially USANetwork.com, for the reminder that it’s an all day marathon going on today up until the second season start of Covert Affairs.  TV’s sexiest secret agent who doesn’t carry a gun is back on USA Network and I think her hair is longer.  Um, I mean I think she’s ready for the next summer go round of slapping, kicking, pushing and throwing around bad guys at 10PM.

One of USA Network’s best shows with Piper Perabo, the hot new face on television as newbie agent Annie Walker.  And don’t say “Annie get your gun” because in great fashion this show is truly one of television’s most active shows with a lot of great stunt work but the lead character rarely, almost never shoots a gun.

How cool, especially with director Doug Liman who worked on the Bourne action movie series that included a lot of guns used and carried by Jason Bourne. Don’t totally think there’s not a lot of shots going around, just not from Piper Perabo’s Annie Walker.

Don’t let her good looks fool you.  She still wants to get involved in the action but the crew won’t let her.  In an interview with USA Today Piper Perabo says “I’m willing to suffer the bumps and bruises to make the show great.”

And her hair is longer.

Anyway read more from USA Today on Covert Affairs.  By the way this is a really good show.  Great cast with Christopher Gorman and Kari Matchett but you’re watching, and I have to say it, it’s Piper Perabo throughout.

This is a guy’s show, no doubt because of Piper and the action.  Women, oh they will be all over her gear because she’s pretty slick and clean in her wardrobe.

One of USA Network’s best shows back tonight at 10PM.

NBC Gets Back the Olympics

June 7th, 2011 No comments

NBC is the winning bidder for the exclusive rights to the next four Olympic broadcasts beating out ESPN and FOX Sports according to the Associated Press.  The Sochi Winter Games in 2014 and the Rio de Janiero Summer Games in 2016 locations will be the first two broadcasts and then the following two Olympic Games will be on NBC as well.

ESPN and FOX both bid on the Games as NBC and the merger with Comcast was expected to give the challengers an upper hand in the negotiations but just think of the mess not getting the Games would have cost NBC as a network.  From image to internal employee morale.

No word on the rights fees paid by NBC.

Luke Russert’s Move to NBC News a Solid Choice, More Exposure to Come

June 7th, 2011 No comments

Family contacts or because you were a great athlete normally gets you a gig in certain companies in broadcasting.  NBC is one  of those network’s that uses this foundation to make on-air choices for who will get a gig based on prior efforts whether familial or because you can run through an offensive line to score a touchdown.

Jenna Bush Hager with the Today Show and the daughter of former President Bush was one choice that still makes me want to take my fingernails and scratch them on a chalkboard.  Still awful today as she was on day one.  Then there was Tiki Barber who made his short stint on Today which was more awful than Jenna Bush Hager.  He was only there because he was a good looking black dude that played for the New York Giants football team and the hoopla behind his hiring was electric, which then led to getting the red lettered bill from the electric company and coming home finding no lights on in any room.  Yes the electric company shut you down.

The only thing NBC got from Tike Barber, well was nothing.  Absolutely nothing.  What did Tiki get?  A hot, blond girlfriend, a really expensive divorce proceeding and the need to put a helmet back on his head because he’s broke.

Luke Russert, NBC News Correspondent

Now bring on Luke  Russert.  Son of the late, great, solid NBC newsman Tim Russert who hosted Meet The Press.  After watching Jenna Bush Hager and Tiki Barber ruin my time spent viewing Today on NBC, there’s good news to report on this family tie in with NBC”s hiring of Luke Russert.  Because without question he is a chip off his Dad’s old block.

His delivery is smooth and slick and smart for a newbie.  This morning on his report on Weinergate, his live intro and outro were absolutely perfect.  His voiceover efforts during his report on the scandal were flawless, engaging and you didn’t feel as if it was forced by someone that had limited experience in reporting, thrown in to an on-air job because of nepotism via family or sports.

The guy is really good.  Should we have expected anything less?  Probably not.  He’s young, good looking and will help in bringing a new demographic to television news that generally skews to a much older viewer.  Smart move by NBC.  And a really simple, easy one.

I still miss Tim Russert.  David Gregory has become so much better on Meet The Press but I still miss Tim Russert.  Life though must go on right, so David has my eyes on Sunday mornings.  But to see Luke Russert’s effort begin at such a high level will garner him a massive amount of exposure on NBC’s Today Show and no doubt lead to additional exposure throughout all NBC news properties and it will be well deserved.

ABC/ESPN Top Basketball Analyst Mark Jackson New Head Coach, Golden State Warriors

June 7th, 2011 No comments

Finally.  After a long haul for the New York basketball native, Mark Jackson got himself a head coaching job in the National Basketball Association.

Now he gets to put some of his solid basketball analysis to work with the Golden State Warriors as the top analyst for ABC/ESPN’s coverage of the NBA Finals gets the lead gig with the west coast based team.  The former NBA point guard for the New York Knicks and the Indiana Pacers is a brilliant basketball mind and had been rumored  to be in line for several head coaching jobs in the NBA the day he sat down in the analyst’s chair.

Jackson has never coached a day in his life in the NBA either as a head coach or an assistant.  So this is a big risk for him and the Warriors who have had limited competitiveness over the years and need a big name which Jackson has right now with his work on ABC/ESPN.  He’s got a 3 year $6 million deal to coach the Warriors.

Reese Witherspoon Talks to Young Women, Better Ways to Break Hollywood (Video)

June 6th, 2011 No comments

Once again some more great television.  OK so the MTV Movie Awards were fill with the “f” word throughout but Reese Witherspoon stole the show and not a lot of people in the television industry may have liked it.  Especially those over at MTV, the lead network in reality programming on television.

“It’s possible to make it in Hollywood without a reality show,” she said after accepting her MTV 2011 Generation Award.  And you have to watch the rest of the video below to hear how she asked young women not to take off their clothing to have success in the movies or television.

It’s about time.  Yeah this web-site writes a lot of stories about reality television because let’s be real it’s the new world order for entertainment today.  But some people in general, not just young women, go way beyond the scope of what’s reality to get a program and most don’t even get close.  To fake your kid going up in a balloon or the one I saw on Dr. Phil.  Get this.  Parents who set their children on fire (wearing protective gear of course) to create their own reality show is a bit much.

Reese is great.  While the “f” words were flying, even one from her, the point was made.  Keep your clothes on, your kids out of balloons and drop the match because there are better, more appropriate ways to make it in the entertainment business.

Sad thing.  Only a few people will listen.

Anthony Weiner’s ‘Weinergate’ and a Good Day for Television News

June 6th, 2011 No comments

Even the media is getting tired of the scum, the mess of politics, the lewdness that seems to be part of the process that continues to make us all believe these people we elect are bigger, better than us.  It’s time to admit it and I will be the first to go on record.

We all have some internal, seriously messed up sexual deficiencies that we’d all like to keep secret.  Hey I’m the first to admit that at 54 years of age I like chatting up women half my age, dating them and subsequently wading them through all of their ‘daddy’ issues.

And for the record, I will not stop.

OK so there you have it.  I’m scum, no?  Who among us can say that checking out a few videos on Pornhub.com is not something that most heterosexual males do on a daily or weekly basis.  For the official ranking, I looked on Alexa.com, which reviews and provides detailed information on Pornhub.com and not surprisingly the global rank is at 62.  Meaning of all web-sites ranked worldwide, this site is ranked 62 of all available web-sites, once again, in the world.

In the United States, the site is ranked at 46 of all sites visited domestically.  Yeah 46 with an average of 6 page-views per user and over 7 minutes per visit for those users.  Not many more minutes needed to do what you need to do on this site.

So we look at Congressman Anthony Weiner and get all excited, as we do in the media, about his transgressions and get lost over something that most of us do and are everyday.  Measure our sexuality.

What’s wrong with that?  Should we expect more from someone that we elect to run this country?  Newt Gingrich, running for President has had multiple wives, John Edwards who ran for President funneled money to his baby’s mama during that failed campaign and every time a Republican screams against gay rights, well that’s the first person you look at real hard to see what same sex URL he has sitting on his computer screen at 2 in the morning.

But the frenzy seems to be ending.  Watching CNN and Wolf Blitzer’s The Situation Room gave us all a real read as to the importance of this Anthony Weiner scumbag element of a story.  So did Brian Williams and his open on Nightly News. Blitzer mentioned a few e-mails and Tweets that basically asked to change the topic and he did.  Then Brian Williams spent a limited time at the top of his broadcast to then go to more important news.  Yeah several servicemen died in Iraq today.  Yes we are fighting a couple of three wars.

And there’s one person to blame.  Another politician.  Barack Obama.  And the birther controversy that took control of the news cycle for several weeks in huge fashion until he decided to release his birth certificate.  The sideshow with the carnival barker took over the weak news media and the cameras followed Donald Trump toward one more example of embarrassment for the industry.  But today, instead of Chuck Todd, the political reporter for NBC having an orgasm over a press conference where the media took this President away from killing Osama Bin Laden, he was seated next to Brian Williams discussing Defense Secretary Robert Gates and his farewell to the troops in Afghanistan.

Gee which story holds more importance?

NBC, CNN and the other news services just got smarter today.  A lot smarter.  There are other really important “stuff” in the words of the President that we all have to do.  Rather than focus on Anthony Weiner’s freaky deaky life.  I have to say that today was a good day for television news.

Why David Letterman “Rocks The Mike Right” in Interview with Lady Gaga

June 6th, 2011 No comments

David Letterman is a funny guy.  Great interview.  Like Jay Leno, but David Letterman kicks butt.  “What are you wearing,” he asks Lady Gaga during his interview last week with her on Late Night with David Letterman.

Well if you look at her Batman outfit during her appearance you will see why David might have been a bit confused and dazed like he always seems to be when interviewing strange characters that is Lady Gaga.

Check out the interview.  It’s classic Letterman.
