“Reset the tone” is the Plan for ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”

June 11th, 2011 No comments

There’s going to be a new look to Law & Order: SVU this coming season.  A lot of new faces but one is definitely coming back, that in the name of new reality show star Ice – T.  Other than that, well your guess will be as good as any as the show is making a serious transition for season 13.

Christopher Meloni as Det. Elliot Stabler and Mariska Hargitay as Det. Olivia Benson

Ice-T has inked a deal to return to the show for the next two seasons if SVU gets another green light past this year.  With all of the major cast changes coming to the show, season 14 could be in question.  With Mariska Hargitay taking a lighter work load after adopting a new baby with her husband Peter Hermann and Christopher Meloni announcing that he’s leaving the show, will viewers who have already been turning away from Law & Order: SVU keep watching?

Announcing that the series will plan to “reset the tone” according to NBC Entertainment President Robert Greenblatt, you can expect to see a much different approach to refreshing SVU.  With new showrunner Warren Leight taking over this season, expect to see different story-lines featuring other talent as the focus.  Names have been bantered back and forth for who will replace Mariska Hargitay, but no word on who will take over for Meloni this season.

Law & Order: SVU is the only member of the franchise left on television with Criminal Intent in its last season, the original Law & Order gone and Law & Order: Los Angeles headed to the canceled bin after finishing it last episodes over the last couple of weeks.

Ally Walker’s Return as ‘The Protector’ on Lifetime (Video)

June 10th, 2011 No comments

You saw her last full time role on television in NBC’s Profiler.  Yeah that Jack of All Trades nemesis drove Ally Walker’s Samantha Waters simply nuts.  But Profiler, which was one of the earlier tests of forensics and FBI investigative team tactics, only last for four seasons from ’96 to 2000.  Before Criminal Minds, there was Profiler.

Now Ally Walker returns to Lifetime television and I have to admit that I rarely flip on this network because it’s really female friendly, but we do write about Lifetime when there’s a special of note.  But not about original programming and The Protector launches Sunday night on the network.

Ally Walker in 'The Protector' on Lifetime

Ally Walker stars as an LAPD detective balancing the life of some serious daytime work along with raising two boys as a single mother.  Walker just finished a couple of seasons on the FX hit show Sons of Anarchy but can’t return to that show because of a big bullet hole in the back of the head of her character FBI agent June Stahl in the finale last season.  So here we have The Protector.

I have this one on my DVR for Sunday night at 10.  Only because I would never remember to turn on Lifetime on a Sunday night for any reason but a cop show with a good performer, and not one that doesn’t look a day over 20 might have some attraction, even to a man.

Good luck with this one Ally Walker.

’30 Rocks’ Tracy Morgan in Gay Slur Controversy, Tina Fey Responds

June 10th, 2011 No comments

Some days we give entertainers a bit too much credit.  We think they are smart, mature and have good judgment.  I mean aren’t they supposed to be brighter than the average human being.

Nope.  Arnold Schwarzenegger proved that.  He was an entertainer and politician, supposed to be smarter, right?  Oh yeah he gets the double whammy on stupidity.

'30 Rocks' Tracy Morgan and Star Jones

Now Tracy Morgan joins the pack of really stupid entertainers.  He’s apologizing now for part of his stand-up comedy routine where, and he said if his son was gay he would “pull out a knife and stab he little N-word.”  And he didn’t stop there.  No, he couldn’t stop there.  According to a Facebook user, Morgan then said he didn’t give a “bleep if it angered gays or lesbians.”

This all happened at a live show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.  And several people in attendance left his show after those comments.  Kevin Rogers who wrote the details of Morgan’s tirade on his Facebook page and who is gay said he was “just very, very, very disappointed” in Morgan and that there were more homophobic jokes during his performance.

Well after Rogers posted his Why I No Longer ‘Like’ Tracy Morgan – A Must Read on his Facebook page, the story was picked up by the non -profit group Truth Wins Out on Wednesday.   Then GLAAD became involved as well.  Um, this is not what Tracey Morgan wanted out of a few jokes.

“I want to apologize to my fans and the gay and lesbian community for my choice of words,” Morgan said in a statement.  “I’m not a hateful person…this clearly went too far,” he continued.

I will always believe that people who use angry words against gays or lesbians are closeted and truly have tendencies inside them that match those they denigrate.

What does this mean for his future?  Well half of the people working in entertainment, especially in Hollywood, are part of the gay and lesbian community.  In fact there’s always been talk of the Gay Mafia in Los Angeles, a group of very high level members of that community, that run Hollywood.  Careers go in to the river with such statements.  And with 30 Rock on the decline, Tracey Morgan’s value as a talent for future content could be diminished.

We shall see.  As I wrote on another entertainment site’s blog today, Tracey Morgan can say whatever he wants to say under the United States Constitution.  That’s his right.  With that freedom comes the responsibility of good judgment.  Tracy Morgan clearly lacks judgment.

Check out the link to Robert Greenblatt’s follow-up piece on Tina Fey’s comments.

“Ice Loves Coco, Ice Loves Coco, Ice Loves Coco, Ice Loves Coco” New on E! (Video)

June 9th, 2011 No comments

This one has fun and maybe success written all over it.  Ice-T, the rapper turned actor on the NBC series Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, is working with his really fine, bootylicious wife Coco Marie Austin on a new reality show that launches on E! Sunday night.

Ice-T and wife Nicole "Coco Marie" Austin from 'Ice Loves Coco' on E!

What’s this show about?  Well what do you think?  E! calls them “Hollywood’s most smokin’ couple” when they describe their new reality show Ice Loves Coco which launches Sunday at 10:30PM.

Now you gotta watch these clips below.  This actually could be fun because the promotional spots for Ice Love Coco are pretty cool.  Now Coco is one of these white girls that has sister back o booty, no question.  And  Ice-T appreciates that fact and rolls with it big time.  They met each other when Ice-T was doing a music video and the rest is history.  But Ice Loves Coco is so perfect for reality television that this could be a winner.  Only the summer and a Sunday night launch could hurt this show.

But this could be fun.

Kiefer Sutherland and Now Danny Glover in FOX’s ‘Touch’

June 9th, 2011 No comments

We talked about Kiefer Sutherland’s return to FOX in the pilot Touch but with the addition of Danny Glover as a regular cast member definitely brings some serious props to this new series.  He doesn’t do a lot of television so this is a huge acquisition of talent for the new series.

Melissa Balin, Danny Glover and Melissa Etheridge

TVLine is reporting that Danny Glover will play Professor Arthur DeWitt, a brainiac that works with gifted children in the series that focuses on Sutherland’s character’s son who is mute and autistic but can predict events before the happen.

Danny Glover’s recent television critics include six episodes on ABC’s Brothers and Sisters, an episode each on Psych, Human Target and My Name Is Earl but that’s about it since a four episode run on E.R.

Watch Jon Cryer, ‘Two and a Half Men’ Semi-Trash Charlie Sheen (Video)

June 9th, 2011 No comments

Well consider this the final screw in the coffin of Charlie Sheen.  And if anyone from Two and a Half Men can go on David Letterman and dish the dirt on Charlie Sheen it’s Jon Cryer.

Jon Cryer from 'Two and a Half Men' and David LettermanCertainly he’s humorous about the whole process that led to the dismissal of Charlie Sheen, but as you watch this interview with David Letterman things got really serious outside of the crap Sheen was tossing around about Cryer and his bosses at CBS and Warner.

Great content here.  Check it out.

‘Ultimate Fighting Championship’ Looking to Buy ‘G4TV’

June 9th, 2011 No comments

Well the WWE, World Wrestling Entertainment, wants to start their own cable network.  Talk has been around for a year or so on that plan but all seems quiet for now.  But there’s big news for another young, male directed “fighting” concept known as UFC, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which is looking to jump in to the cable television business.

UFC and NBC are in talks to hand over control of the fledgling network G4TV to the Ultimate Fighting Championship team to manage and program.  And apparently G4TV needs the help.  The NBC owned network was dropped by DirecTV because of low ratings and its brand is still considered “games for television” which many episodes on COPS don’t seem to fit any consitency in programming.  So that’s the challenge for UFC and NBC would be glad to get rid of the network as it is a drag on their other popular properties like Bravo, E! and USA Network.

Spike TV is where UFC currently holds its brand with The Ultimate Fighter airing on that network but the ratings for that show have been tanking while UFC officials are asking for a higher fee to carry the show.  If Spike TV passes on the show that garnered its second smallest audience in 13 years airing on Spike TV, then having its own network would be the next    smart move.

ABC’s Diane Sawyer Grabs Huge Interview with Kidnapped Jaycee Dugard

June 9th, 2011 No comments

In this season of explosive news stories this one was probably one of the most compelling for everyone.  Yeah there’s Casey Anthony and the murder of her daughter but who really has an ounce of emotion for Casey Anthony.   There’s the Arnold Schwarzenegger mess here in California but that’s Hollywood type crap.

Diane Sawyer, anchor of 'ABC's World News Tonight'

Then there is Jaycee Dugard.  One of the most emotional, incredible, outrageous and engaging stories that gripped TV watchers for months after she was found alive, missing for 18 years.   ABC news queen Diane Sawyer, anchor of World News Tonight on the network, will get the most sought after interview of every news organization.  The first sit-down with the kidnap victim Jaycee Dugard.

With both her kidnappers arrested and sentenced to prison, this will be the first look at Jaycee Dugard since her rescue in August 2009.  Her new memoir on her ordeal, A Stolen Life, will be released after the ABC News interview and Friday marks 20 years since she was kidnapped.

Two D.C. Cops Get ‘Rat Squad’ Transfer After Charlie Sheen Police Escort

June 8th, 2011 No comments

Maybe Charlie Sheen can pay for the demotion that two Washington city cops got for that police escort he got while on his personal tour after he getting dumped by Two and a Half Men. He wanted to pay the crew when that show was halted in mid production after he got singed for his extra-curricular activities which led to his demise.  Now two D.C. cops have now been transferred to toilet detail after they provided Sheen with that police escort because he was late for his stage show.

The Associated Press is reporting the transfer or demotion, however you want to term it, of two members of the Special Operations Division of the Washington police department because they approved the escort.  Captain Robert Atcheson and Lt. Stuart Emerman were transferred to no man’s land because of the incident.  Where they’ve been sent, well that has yet to be detailed but you can bet no other cop in the D.C. police department or any other police department in the continental United States or the state of Hawaii will make such a stupid move again.

Sheen was late from a court appearance he had to attend in Los Angeles and got back to Washington, running very late for another one of his very dull shows.  He received a police escort which violated department policy and the rat squad as they are known, more nicely as Internal Affairs, began an investigation.  And the rat squad loves these types of investigations because Lindsay Lohan could tell this was a stupid move by a couple of stupid cops.

A spokesperson for the department and a division commander both said they had no clue as to why the two were transferred.

Teens Use Less ‘Idiot Box’ More Mobile, Chat Less on Phone Says Nielsen

June 8th, 2011 No comments

What’s going on here?  Remember us old school TV watchers, back in the day when our parents called the television The Idiot Box.  “Stop watching that idiot box,” they’d say and we’d have to turn off the television set and go outside and play.  Yeah it was tough back then if you really like TV like I did but there were only three channels plus a public station back then so going out to play was also always on the schedule.

Now these kids watch TV all day, right?  Jersey Shore watch out.  Kids between 12 and 17 years of age are watching less and less television according to a Nielsen report.  The average American watches a little over 34 hours of television every week while kids between the mentioned age group only turn on a bit more than 23 hours a week.  That’s a huge difference.

But these kids are not headed to the library, picking up a copy of War and Peace to read or The Art of War from the philosopher Sun Tzu.

They are watching 7 hours plus of content on their mobile devices while the rest of us only view a little over four hours.  So that’s where that age group (12-17) are getting most of their information.  And ad agencies “peep this” as the kids would say.  More than half of those kid users say they “always” or “sometimes” watch the ads that are presented to them on their mobile devices.

Now here’s one for you advertisers as well.  You wanna reach this age group via social networking sites because 78% of them visit those properties at least once during a given month.  While they only make up 7% of those on social networking sites.  That’s amazing, but when you think about it they can’t drive so the Facebook it is.

Why are they losing their HDTV’s in favor of mobile?  Texting.  The 12 to 17 year old age group send 3,364 texts a month.  Dang!  By comparison the 18 to 24 year old age group send only 1,640 texts.

Clearly the younger age group is definitely turning off that idiot box.
