‘Falling Skies’ Certainly is No ‘The Walking Dead’ Simply Awful

June 19th, 2011 No comments

Oh my this could be TNT’s worst effort ever.  Surely to be strong in the ratings but Falling Skies could be the worst summer effort ever.  I could even recommend The Glades over Falling Skies and I really can’t handle that A&E show which is really bad.

Noah Wyle, 'Tom Mason' on TNT's 'Falling Skies'

Noah Wyle, 'Tom Mason' on TNT's 'Falling Skies'

First off everybody seems to be in a good mood.  Lots of smiles for a bunch of people who have gone through a world annihilation from a bunch of mechanical aliens.  But everybody seems to be in a good mood.  I’m sorry but if aliens have taken my life and completely turned it upside, taking all of the kids and turning them in to zombies, the thought of smiling and having a fun time just doesn’t makes sense.

And nobody, let me repeat, nobody can act.  The damn aliens are frankly more engaging than any of the characters.  Ben, the son taken by the aliens and Noah Wyle (Tom Mason) character’s son was the best actor and he was a zombie.

And the second hour of this new series pitted his crew against a gang of human thugs.  Kinda thought the fight was against the aliens not a bunch of biker dudes.  Seems the writers would want to set up that battle before bringing in a bunch of thugs who held them captive for a minute.

And the thugs couldn’t act either.

Too much levity in this one.  Not enough reality that would made this worth a true sci fi effort.  Falling Skies falls off the DVR chart as of next week if this one doesn’t get any better.   Expected more from Steven Spielberg after all of the TNT hype.

TNT airs Falling Skies, at least for now, Sundays at 10PM on TNT.  Watch it now.  The only way it gets a second season is if Steven Spielberg’s name gets it from a respect arena.  Other than that, this one is really bad.

“I love everything…not good for me, I love M&Ms, Kit Kats, Snickers and Goobers,” says Selena Gomez

June 19th, 2011 No comments

No wonder why we have an obesity issue in this country.  Because of the quote above from pop singer Selena Gomez, who at 18 years of age, is on her way to a life of being overweight, diabetic, locked in to taking medication for high blood pressure and hypertension, a life that most of us have learned at a certain age is nothing more than a prescription for a short life.

Selena Gomez is on a diet of M&M’s, Kit Kats, Snickers bars and Goobers.  And when she ended up in the hospital after an appearance with Jay Leno on The Tonight Show, she says she will definitely change her diet habits.  But how does someone consume that much candy, enough that you get to rushed to a medical center for a sugar overdose?

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

'The Tonight Show' with Jay Leno and guest Selena Gomez

And most of us let this story go by without a hint of concern about how this singer, with a major teen following, on course to be fat, overweight and completely out of shape by the time she’s 30  years old.

It’s hard to have two businesses.  One this television blog.  The other a marketing company that just pitched a major corporation in the insurance field for a program to promote healthy eating habits and regular exercise.   This program is actually targeted toward minority  kids in the Los Angeles area, a community which Ms. Gomez happens to be a member ethnically.  The program presented involves Cedars-Sinai Hospital staff, several dieticians and nutritionists, all brought together under the umbrella of the insurance brand to help kids and then this story about Selena Gomez.

One of the members of this nutrition team sent me an e-mail last night.  In 9 years, by the year 2020, 70% of Americans will be classified as obese and overweight.  “It’s actually quite frightening and very sad,” she said in her e-mail.

And it is.  But the focus of Selena Gomez’s mishap with Kit Kats and Snickers bars just went by the board, no discussion of the deeper reason for her malady and life goes on, what short life she may have if she continues on her current dietary intake.

It was Dancing With the Stars, with Kirstie Alley I was watching this past series of shows.  What was the commercial she was on Weight WatchersJenny Craig?  I don’t even want to do the simple research to find out which weight loss brand she acted as celebrity spokesperson.  And then her appearances on Oprah and other shows highlight her massive weight gain and we all supported her change in body type.  Yet most men who watched her on Cheers did so because, well let’s be frank, we all wanted to spend a night or two with Kirstie Alley. Now, well now most men would rather spend time with themselves.

I’m not dissing overweight people.  Yet I applaud the group that works hard to lose the weight through diet and exercise.  I don’t like the ones that think it’s OK to eat what they want to eat, putting a burden on all of us as consumers seeking inexpensive health insurance.  I just believe we had an opportunity to do what we all have seen happening to Tracy Morgan, an opportunity for a learning session to highlight the need for someone like Selena Gomez to talk about this issue in a lot more detail.

70%, yes 70% of Americans will be classified as obese or overweight.  What a mess.  What a serious mess.

A Day in the Life of Two Guys ‘Stuck’ Overnight at Dallas Fort Worth Airport (Video)

June 19th, 2011 No comments

We have all been there for one reason or another.  The one excuse, and it’s a smart one, is weather.  Stuck at an airport, flight canceled, no money for a hotel or motel room, no transportation to go anywhere and nothing else to do but screw around at an airport.  Overnight.

'Stuck' by Joe Ayala and Larry Chen on Vimeo

'Stuck' by Joe Ayala and Larry Chen

As a young kid that was fun.  Once you get a bit older, maybe not.  But if someone in the television business doesn’t pick up on these guys soon, well TV is missing out.

These two dudes were on their way home from the Formula Drift Palm Beach, one of those wild and crazy car racing events, when they got all caught up in canceled flight status.  Joe Ayala and Larry Chen decided to spend time flowing throughout DFW Airport rather than doing what nuts their age usually do and curl up against a wall and sleep it off.  And the video created below is produced too well for the internet.

Spread the word.  These guys are good, really good.

Pro Baller John Wall, Please Stick to the Dougie and Basketball, No More Baseball (Videos)

June 18th, 2011 No comments

OK so this is embarrassing.  One thing I always believed when it came to professional athletes.  They could always play other sports, at least one, at some level that would not get this much juice on every social network in America.  And beyond.

Washington Bullets Point Guard John Wall

Washington Bullets Point Guard John Wall

John Wall, the rookie superstar point guard for the NBA’s Washington Bullets, is just that a future superstar in the league.  Drafted as a first round pick of the Bullets, Wall averaged over 16 points per game, 8 plus assists per game and is a future NBA All Star with a long career ahead of him.

Maybe he should stick to basketball after this video.  Especially when you’re on the television broadcast of a baseball game.

I remember when I owned a comedy club in Philly and Blair Thomas, a running back who Joe Paterno called the best at that position that he ever coached, reserved a seat with his wife for a night of laughter.  The room for the comedy performances doubled as a sports bar with one of those basketball games where you shoot hoops in a net.  After the show he made 80 in a row, 80.  Now that’s a guy, who played in the NFL with the Jets, the Bears and the Patriots, that could do well in both sports.

John Wall, for all of his talent, is no Blair Thomas.  Not even close.  I had to watch this 278 times and still say John must stick to the hardwood and leave the baseball diamond, well to even little league guys and gals.

But he can do the Dougie.  Yes he can do the Dougie.

After a Whole Lotta Hype, Finally ‘Falling Skies’ Here on TNT (Videos)

June 18th, 2011 No comments

We want to than Steven Spielberg.  Especially those of us who really like The Walking Dead or are really looking forward to Terra Nova and its coming debut on FOX.  Now comes the premiere of TNT’s Falling Skies, the new sci fi thriller that sure to give fans of the genre a taste of summer fun.

Falling Skies starts Sunday and it’s sure to be a big winner.  With limited summer content to fill the void of The Walking Dead, Falling Skies brings us another assault on Earth with the invasion of whatever the heck these things are that plan to take over the world.

Noah Wyle as 'Tom Mason' on TNT's 'Falling Skies'

Noah Wyle as 'Tom Mason' on TNT's 'Falling Skies'

We do know this.  Apparently they are invading Earth to take rid us of our children.  And most of us may be able to identify several children that we would like to rid ourselves of but at some point we’d like them back.  These aliens have no intent on satisfying the return policy labeled on these kids and the battle is on.

The story looks at the what takes place six months after the initial assault by the aliens.  Most of the world has been demolished.  And the focus of Falling Skies is Noah Wyle’s Tom Mason, who’s wife was killed in the attack and son who was captured by the aliens and his goal to get his son returned.  Along with Tom Mason are a bunch of regular Joes that work with him to keep the rest of kids from being captured and the older folks from being eliminated.

This one has so much hype behind it that it’s got to be winner.  Go to the link below for more details and a full cast list on Falling Skies.

‘Charlie Harper’ Drives Mercedes Off a Cliff is Rumor on Charlie Sheen’s Demise

June 17th, 2011 No comments

So that’s what they’re talking about really big time in Hollywood today.  Extra, the syndicated television show that runs in most cities after your network evening news, is reporting that writers are working on a script that says Charlie Harper misses a turn and drives his Mercedes off a cliff.

Oh Peter Lorre, the creator of  Two and a Half Men, the hit CBS show, is getting his payback on Charlie Sheen.

charlie sheens mercedes

Charlie Sheen's Stolen Mercedes

That’s the plan to get rid of the actor’s character on the show.  Now if you remember Charlie Sheen was the victim of two car thefts of his Mercedes and both times the car was driven off a cliff.  No dead bodies were found at either incident but the cars were totaled.  Now the rumored plan is to create the same concept to kill off Charlie Harper from Two and a Half Men.

Wow!

And it seems that Charlie Harper doesn’t have a will.  Because somehow his replacement on the show, Ashton Kutcher, purchases the home the character owned on the beach in Malibu, California and moves in to the house, keeping Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones as his house guests.

The producers are completely denying that the script will go as discussed but you gotta admit it’s a pretty good idea.  In the meantime Charlie Sheen has been running around Hollywood pitching a new comedy show of his own to several networks with FOX as his potential target.  FOX of course is denying that report but Sheen would be a perfect fit for the youth oriented FOX.

Is Sheen ready to grow up and go to work?  That seems to be the question for any network that will take a chance on the much maligned actor.

More to come.  Oh you gotta admit as well that this is actually fun.

June 17th, 2011 No comments

You’re about to watch a 180 degree flip on Monday July 4th on NBC.  From R&B and Pop to Country, NBC will broadcast the Macy’s 4th of July Spectacular and Fireworks show starting at 9PM Eastern/8PM Central.

Beyonce and Show Your Helping Hand Campaign

Both superstars are Grammy winning artists as Beyonce has grabbed on to 16 of those awards in her career as a performer.  And she’s sold over 75 million records worldwide to give her other awards like Artist of the Decade from the people over at the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) and  and Artist of the 2000′s by Billboard Magazine. Put all of that on the same page with two fashion lines and an acting career and Beyonce is, in the words of DJ Jerry Blavat, “bombastic!”

On the same stage is 3 time Grammy winning country music guy Brad Paisely who released a new album  in May titled This Is Country Music. He’s had 19 number one ranked hits on the country music charts.  Also Paisley is the last winner of the Country Music Entertainer of the Year award and 14 each in the categories of Country Music Awards and Academy of Country Music awards.

Hubris, Ego of Hollywood Actors, Ed O’Neill ‘Modern Family’ and Rob Lowe ‘Parks and Recreation’

June 16th, 2011 No comments

I guess these people want us to feel sorry for them.  Well let’s say this at the start.  There’s no love lost for some of these people.  These are stories I don’t like to write.  Because I really like Ed O’Neill and Rob Lowe after watching this video.   I’ve always liked their work.  O’Neill in Married With Children, his best role.  Even in the makeover of Dragnet, for the limited time it ran.  He does good work.

And Rob Lowe, well the list goes on and on.  Parks and Recreation currently, Brothers and Sisters which I never watched on the chick network ABC but he’s perfect for that show.  And of course The West Wing, a great show on NBC.  But when they start to bitch and moan about salaries they are offered in Hollywood, in this economy, when I have to watch The Today Show’s Al Roker work with some really great corporations helping regular people who live paycheck to paycheck, these two actors have turned themselves in to real jerks.

Ed O'Neill from 'Modern Family' and Rob Lowe from 'Parks and Recreation'

Ed O'Neill from 'Modern Family' and Rob Lowe from 'Parks and Recreation'

Watch the video from The Hollywood Reporter‘s annual Emmy Comedy Actor Roundtable and you’d be shocked if you’re a fan of both performers and listen to the whine about $40,000 for six weeks worth of work.  What person in America would turn down $40,000 for six weeks of work?  Nobody, right?  And I don’t blame them.  My issue is with The Hollywood Reporter.  For even making these actors talk on the topic.

We all believe we deserve whatever we deserve for our services.  I get the reason why Ed O’Neill turned down the role he was offered by HBO for his work on that project.  But remember Ed and Rob who watches your show.  This might be a time to tamp down your ego and understand that the majority of your viewers may be lucky to make $40,000 in a full year let alone six weeks.

Not a smart move by either performer.  Especially O’Neill.  He has the most to lose should Modern Family tank which is always on board for any show.  Because, well he’s old.  Right now he’s grabbing $90,000 per episode for the ABC hit show and his salary is expected to jump up to $150,000 an episode because of his history on Married With Children.  He’s a funny guy.  But it may be smart to shut the hell up and collect your $1 million salary per year and not piss off your viewers.

We can all say this, Ed, with full confidence that people are suffering in this economy and no one feels sorry for you right now at your salary with Modern Family.  And viewers, though the show is very funny and produced impeccably, won’t cut you a break for complaining about someone making a million dollars a year.

Rob Lowe?  At least he’s pretty.  So he’s gonna be around for a while.  But still there’s no love lost for either performer after watching this video.  You judge for yourself.  But Ed O’Neill really comes off like a real asshole.

Surprise! Surprise! ‘Real Housewives of New York/New Jersey’ Sued

June 16th, 2011 No comments

Or should we say no “surprise, surprise!” as once again a story about a member of a TV reality show getting in hot water with the law.  Now I have to admit that I am done calling these people reality “stars” as almost every month, which is now getting to almost every week, we see a story about one of these regular people caught up in a legal beef.

Now we know not to call these people “stars” anymore because a star is Brad Pitt.  A star is Halle Berry.  If they walked past me, I might know who they are.  If Cindy Barshop or Teresa Guidice walked past me, slapped me, pulled a gun on me, ran me over with their car and survived, I would have no clue how to identify them or even pick them out of a lineup.

Cindy Barshop from 'The Real Housewives of New York City'

But there are people who know and care to know who they are.  Because they’re both being sued.  Cindy Barshop from Bravo’s Real Housewives of New York is facing a discrimination lawsuit from one of her former workers at her spa.  Altovise Collier says she applied online to work at the shop  and was hired but Barshop’s people didn’t know she was African American.  She was the subject of pay half of her co-workers in the same position and subjected to verbal taunts as well. She was fired shortly after complaining and Barshop says it was because of “the quality of her work” according to a story in the New York Post.

I’m not taking sides or anything but is it that hard to do a good job at a spa?  Here comes the law firm of Rabinowitz, Rabinowitz and the other Rabinowitz.

Teresa Guidoce from Bravo's 'Real Housewives of New Jersey'

Teresa Guidice from Bravo's 'Real Housewives of New Jersey'

Then come Teresa Guidice from Bravo’s Real Housewives of New Jersey.  She got in to a bar brawl with her husband versus another couple in the Dominican Republic and once they found out she was a reality “star” they are now suing.  Guidice is accuses of spraying a bottle of champagne on the opposing couple and mocking the woman’s mother-in-law when the beverage got in her eyes.  Once again the law firm of Rabinowitz, Rabinowitz and the other Rabinowitz gets the case.

Guidice’s attorney says she acted in self defense as she was physically assaulted by a member of the other team.  He told People Magazine that “they are looking at an opportunity to look in to someone else’s pocket” which seems like a dumb statement since Guidice and her husband filed for bankruptcy to the tune of  $11 million.

More Losses at NBC, D.C. News Gal Norah O’Donnell Changing Networks

June 16th, 2011 No comments

The exodus at NBC continues.  CBS and ABC along with a bit of CNN are all sniping away at the NBC talent pool which recently included Erin Burnett and legal guy and MediaIte owner Dan Abrams.  Now a solid name, well known  to those of us that watch any news content on NBC is leaving the fold.

Norah O’Donnell, from NBC News to CBS News

Norah O’Donnell, from NBC News to CBS News

Norah O’Donnell, who was hired by NBC in 1999, will be headed crosstown to CBS News as Chief White House Reporter and also will be getting the plum job of substituting for Bob Schieffer when he takes a Sunday off from Face The Nation.

Chip Reid currently holds the job as reporter covering the White House and he will be moved to the position of national correspondent based in Washington.

Lots of more talent shifts expected at NBC as the merger with Comcast has prompted on-air personnel to look elsewhere as NBC tightens their wallet.
