Savannah Guthrie Dumps White House for Hour Three of ‘Today’

May 10th, 2011 No comments

Well NBC and the Today Show didn’t miss a beat after Erin Burnett started chatting with CNN about a move to the cable news network.  She may have been the choice to work the third hour of Today on NBC but with her conversations with the ratings challenged news network, NBC has decided to make a significant move on its own.

Savannah Guthrie, who has been the White House correspondent along with Chuck Todd, is moving to the entertainment side of the Today Show on NBC as she announced today on Today that she is taking the new gig on the show.  All the stories say she’s “moving up” but really?  From the White House to the third hour of Today is a step up?

Savannah Guthrie and Brian Williams on 'NBC Nightly News'

Savannah Guthrie and Brian Williams on 'NBC Nightly News'

Yeah, guess that’s what’s considered a good career move, from NBC’s plum gig as a White House reporter to the third hour of Today.  What is the news business coming to?

Anyway Savannah is perfect for this new role although we think it’s a step in the wrong direction.  But with all of the changes now taking place after Meredith Vieira bounces out of Today, why not.  Certainly she will have a lot more fun working on Today than working at the White House.  That’s a clear fact.

Smart positioning by NBC.  Get everyone in place before the fall arrives.  Get them acclimated with their gigs and the audience because ABC’s Good Morning America is closing in fast.  Will be an interesting year to watch the competition for the morning news and entertainment audience.

Stupid People Story Number Two, The Los Angeles Dodgers Ad Campaign

May 10th, 2011 No comments

OK I beat up on Roger Lodge this morning.  Just a bit.  I didn’t like what he said on KTLA today so he deserves a pop upside his dome from me today.  Anyway I’m done with Roger.

For now…

I really should have stayed in that fetal position on the floor, in the corner of my bedroom, attired in only a bathrobe humming Frank Sinatra tunes after Roger put me there.  But noooo!  I had to get up, go to work and walk down Wilshire Boulevard to my bank.

los-angelesdodgers-ad1

And then I see this ad for the Los Angeles Dodgers, at a bus stop booth.  Yes story two of the some really, really stupid content today.  I should have just stayed home but then there was my television set.

No, must go to work.

So we here in Los Angeles have been living through the soap opera we know as the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Frank McCourt and his really estranged wife Jamie have provided what One Life to Live and All My Children could never do and get ratings with it.

Really good television.

Erica Kane could never do what Jaime McCourt has done to her future ex Frank.  Made him remove his private parts and drop them off at Gloria Allred’s Beverly Hills office.

For the record, no one knows who is running the Dodgers.  Do they have enough money?  Is it safe to go to a Dodgers game?  Who owns the damn team?  Someone please answer.  So the saga continues like an episode of Crime Scene Investigation, all leading us to the season finale Thursday when Dr.Ray and serial killer Nate Haskell meet one on one for a final showdown!

OK I lost my train of thought for a moment.  But can’t wait for Thursday night at 9 on CBS.

los-angelesdodgers-ad

Anyway this team is a joke here in Los Angeles.  Complete and utter mismanagement.  From the owners to down on the baseball field.  Nobody goes to the games and now this ridiculous advertising campaign that for now seems to be on bus stops only.  And let me quote here…”It’s time for calling in sick,” that is to your job and attend a midday Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game.

Hey!  They’ve got “half price food and drinks.”  Oh yeah, half priced beer.  Just what we need at a Dodgers game.

Now some might think it’s smart to promote the team this way.  God help you if you want to attend a Dodgers game at night and get bonk, bonk, bonked over the head like some poor Giants fan did recently that landed this guy in a coma since that incident.

But asking people to leave their jobs in the middle of the day, in this economy?

It’s bad enough to have to watch television everyday to watch this team.  And the soap opera about the Los Angeles Dodgers. This group of players on the teams are bad, really bad.  But what ad exec walked in to the boss man’s office and said, “Hey!  Let’s ask people to ditch work during the middle of the day and come to a Dodgers game!”

As one of my ex-girlfriends from the hood in Philly would say, “Is you serious?”

Thank God for the weather today.  Thank God for the L.A. weather in February when the snow rests on the ground in cities like Chicago and Philadelphia.  Because today just seems to be one of those days where stupidity reigns tall in Los Angeles, California.

Has KTLA’s, KLAA’s Roger Lodge Literally Lost His Mind? Lack of Vocabulary? Are You Kidding Me?

May 10th, 2011 No comments

I like Roger Lodge.  He was really good when he hosted that Blind Date show.  Remember that?  Yeah that was a funny show.  People going on really bad dates, like my experience on Match.com.

But today he’s on my really stupid list person list.  The really stupid person list.

Why?

How in the world can he say what he said on the KTLA Morning News program and expect anyone to buy his act anymore?  I know in radio, Rog, that you have to shock your listeners, but to put this on KTLA, well, that was a bit more shocking than I need before I watch you and the crew, then make my switch over to Today on NBC.

Unless it really is an act, which I don’t believe, because his input in the KTLA Morning News program is always something that I like to watch and hear.  He’s usually pretty good.

Until today.

Roger Lodge, KTLA Sports Guy and Morning Drive Host on KLAA 830AM

Roger Lodge, KTLA Sports Guy and Morning Drive Host on KLAA 830AM

C’mon Roger, you really know your sports.  But how can you end up on my really stupid person list?  I’m hurt by your comments this morning, now curled up in a fetal position in the corner of my Koreatown apartment, shades drawn, not able to do my mile walk to my office and get to work.

Your fault Roger Lodge, your fault.

This is L.A.  Somebody get my therapist on line one!

OK so here’s what has me reaching for my medication.  Roger Lodge is the host of the Morning Sports Lodge in KLAA 830AM Radio in Los Angeles.  He does a hit every morning on the KTLA Morning News program hosted by a solid team of local TV folks in Megan Henderson, Chris Schauble, Henry DiCarlo and Ginger Chan.

It’s good TV.  They make me laugh.  Kinda what I get from one of my Match.com dates.  Yeah a lot of laughs.  Then call block.  But anyway…

So Roger comes on, in the midst of my first cup of coffee, to do a short bit every morning before 7AM on KTLA and today’s topic was Lebron James and his press conference where he mumbled the word “retarded” in front of what we call a live microphone in the broadcasting business.

Not good for Lebron.  But that’s Lebron’s problem.

What Roger Lodge said about King James and his “retarded” statement, well maybe Roger Lodge needs to stay away from his mike.  Let’s review what Rog had to say.

“Remember a couple of weeks ago when Kobe made a homophobic slur on the Laker bench…and he caught a lot of heat for it…what do Kobe and Lebron have in common…neither guy went to college.  Maybe lack of vocabulary is the problem here,” said Roger Lodge.

Oh Roger’s stupidity gets better.

“You’re going to get these things from time to time when guys don’t have a good vocabulary, right?”

A slightly stunned anchor team of Megan Henderson and Chris Schauble, without answering Roger Lodge’s question,  did what anchor teams do as professionals.  Look slightly stunned and move on from the stupidity of Roger Lodge.

Equating education to a dumb comment from an athlete has to be so far fetched from Rover the dog.  We know there’s a lack of education with most athletes but to connect that to vocabulary is really, well the Roger Lodge level of stupidity.

Hey Roger!  There are many other people who have said silly things around an open mike.  Let’s name a few Presidents who seem to be very well educated I would think, to attain that level of responsibility.

Yeah a few Presidents.  Just a few Roger.

In addition some would say your comments this morning border on insulting your viewing and listening audience.  And even a hint of racism.  Earth to Roger Lodge!!  Earth to Roger Lodge!!!  Everyone watching KTLA or listening to your show on KLAA (and there are not too many people listening to your show on KLAA) never went to an institution of higher learning like a college or university.

Lebron’s comments, Kobe’s comments weren’t based on the fact that they didn’t go to college.  Maybe it’s just pure poor judgement.  Bad judgment.  Both of these athletes are pretty smart.  They really are.  In the heat of the battle, which one of us can say we’ve never used a slur when making a comment about some person or event going on around us?

Is it because we didn’t go to college or was it at the time poor judgment?  Bad judgment?

When Blake Shelton, a judge on NBC’s The Voice, Tweeted his homophobic comment recently, surely no one gave him foundation by blaming it on his education.  Just poor judgment.  Bad judgment.

Not his education, Roger.

“You gotta be smarter than that Lebron,” continues Roger Lodge.

Oh Roger, oh Roger.

Maybe, Roger, you need to get a bit of an education.

Or maybe you’re flipping moron!

Oh my I said a bad thing about Roger.  Maybe it’s because I have a 6th grade education and didn’t go to college?  Or is it that I am lowering myself to Roger Lodge’s stupidity level and being a person of poor judgment like him, Lebron and Kobe.

My apologies to Roger.  Really.

We all have to be smarter.  Also smarter at KTLA not to do their due diligence prior to letting Roger Lodge make stupid comments on their morning news program.  To insult probable a large portion of KTLA’s viewing audience using the lack of a college education in connection with using a slur as a reason is a bit far fetched, seeking out Rover once again to make my point.

I know some very highly educated people around me that have used a gay slur or the word “retarded” in their conversations yet I connect it to judgment, not their education.

To put one and one together here by Roger Lodge, a guy that I actually like watching on KTLA, well is irresponsible and Roger you are so much better than what you said this morning.

Thank goodness for Megan, Chris, Henry and Ginger.  I still like having them part of my morning routine, Roger, but I thought I would mention my displeasure of what y0u said in a public way.

American TV’s Most Wanted, Former Cali First Lady Maria Shriver

May 10th, 2011 No comments

The race is on.  Big time.  With the just announced separation of The Terminator, The Governator and whatever else you want term him after his two terms as California’s big boss and the former TV goddess, bet easy money that every television network except for FOX is chasing down Maria Shriver to offer her a job.

Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger

Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger

Maria Shriver is no new name to television or TV news.  The newly separated First Lady of the State of California started her career at what is now CBS3 in Philadelphia, KYW television. Then co-anchored the CBS Morning News with Forrest Sawyer, jumped over to NBC to co-anchor the Sunday version of Today Show, even anchoring the weekend evening news programs on NBC before stepping away from the network when her husband Arnold Schwarzenegger decided to run for Governor in California.

Now that his two terms are up, seems she shedding The Terminator, The Governator and will no doubt be contacting her former agent to get back in to the working world.  Their kids are getting much older and don’t need Mommy and Daddy on a full time basis any more and wouldn’t it be a brilliant move for NBC News, The Today Show or any network to bring Maria Shriver back to television?

This is quite frankly a no-brainer.  And good really good for television.  Now that Maria Shriver no longer has to be home at 6PM to serve dinner to Arnold or even fake that she still wants to be with the former Governor, she will be the typical divorced woman of a new generation of divorced women.

What’s that?

Well that’s back to work, back to the grind, back up on the horse, see you later alligator, or as we used to say in radio “see you tomorrow morning at 10 we’ll do it over again” and won’t it be great to see Maria Shriver back on network TV?

Legendary Comic Dick Van Dyke Trashes Reality TV

May 9th, 2011 No comments

Oh this so shows the generation gap doesn’t it?  Dick Van Dyke is a legendary television personality who us old schoolers remember from the The Dick Van Dyke Show back in the early 60′s and the classic movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, is throwing reality television under the bus.

And a big bus at that.

Dick Van Dyke on The Today Show on NBC discussing his book, 'My Lucky Life In and Out of Show Business'

Dick Van Dyke on The Today Show on NBC discussing his book, 'My Lucky Life In and Out of Show Business'

The 85 year old funny man told PopEater.com that “I hate it [reality TV].  I don’t think it’s entertainment,” said Dick Van Dyke.  He was asked to do Dancing with The Stars. “I said I can do one show but on that show you have to come up with a new number every week.  I’m a little past that stage.”

More on reality television.  They “encourage bad behavior” which quite frankly is true.  But yes we love Dick Van Dyke but he is a “little past that stage” because unfortunately reality TV is here to stay.

After watching The Apprentice, Dick Van Dyke noted “I’ve never been so bored in my life!”

For us TV junkies who like stories that are blasts from the past, Dick Van Dyke won three Emmys for his performance in The Dick Van Dyke Show, a daytime Emmy and for another prime-time show Van Dyke and Company.  He has a new memoir out that details a lot of issues in his personal life with drinking and partying.

You can read the full interview with Dick Van Dyke at PopEater.com below.

Getting Yourself Ready for a Healthy Summer of Eating, Drinking and Watching Television

May 9th, 2011 No comments

It’s almost summer and we all tend to get our back ends off of the couch a little bit more which is always a good thing! Network television is running a lot of programs that most of us aren’t really interested in watching. Some cable networks run some hot shows like USA Network’s Burn Notice and Royal Pains. And there’s plenty baseball to watch along with the start of pro football.

But it’s a perfect time year to get active.

Some extra movement is needed as we all want to look svelte in summer attire and it’s easy to do because we have the longer warmer days and evenings reaching out to us.

food2So when the sun goes down during those summer evenings, what can we do before we sit down and flip on our television sets or computers to catch our favorite shows? Get a breath of fresh air and work up a sweat.

Then, after a run, a round of tennis, shooting some hoops, or some sweaty yoga, we all need to replenish our fluids and electrolytes. A yummy way to do this is with an electrolyte replenishing drink. Here a great mix for you to try:

  • 8 oz coconut water
  • 1 fresh lemon squeezed
  • 1 teaspoon of agave nectar
  • A pinch of stevia (a natural sweetener with zero calories)
  • Few ice cubes

Put all of this in a blender and enjoy the refreshing taste of this satisfying blast of taste and electrolytes. It’s good. It’s really good!

This is one way we’ll all be able to look our best during the summer months. We’ll never tell you to stop watching your favorite shows but the need to stay active is so important to keep us looking good and maybe even more importantly, feeling good.

‘CSI’s Marg Helgenberger Calls Justin Bieber a “Brat”

May 9th, 2011 No comments

First the eggs thrown on stage at Justin Bieber’s concert in Sydney, Australia and now this.  You read our story about Justin getting egged last week while performing but now is the real Justin coming out?

Marg Helgenberger, the long standing Katherine Willows on the CBS television show CSI was interviewed by a French radio station and is quoted as saying Justin was “kind of a brat” during the taping of his segments on that show.  “I only had one scene with him but he locked one of the producers in the closet and he put his fist through a cake that was on the cafeteria table” she went on to say.

CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATIONYeah that’s pretty bratty.  But isn’t he 14?  And isn’t he rich?  And isn’t he the hottest name in the entertainment business today?

Yeah.

And this is kind of Justin’s style as they say meaning he’s kind of a practical joker but Marg really didn’t find his antics charming.  I guess after having to create serious content on a show that’s been on the air for 10 years to have a little pop singer come in and mess up your chi was not what the crew wanted from Bieber.

Bieber played a troubled teen during both his appearances on CSI.  No worries for Marg.  His character got shot during his second appearance on the show.

Meredith Vieira Says “Goodbye” to ‘Today’

May 9th, 2011 No comments

Well we’ve been reporting it for a few weeks now so it’s no secret.  But after many years of working with Meredith Vieira in other areas of my marketing brand, I know how hard this lady works on the Today Show and on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

She certainly is a class act.  I think she’s better at Millionaire than Today.  She seems to have so much fun doing that show.  But with all going on in her life, working on Millionaire only is the best move since she’s looking to spend more time with her husband.

Ann Curry and Meredith Vieira on the Today Show on NBC

Ann Curry and Meredith Vieira on the Today Show on NBC

In an emotional moment on this morning’s Today Show, Meredith Vieira officially announced that she will be leaving the show.  “This is a difficult day for me.  I’m trying to hold it together,” she said to the viewers of television’s number one rated morning show.  She will be leaving “in a few weeks” according to her co-host Matt Lauer.  Her contract is not officially up until September.

The shift will mean some familiar faces moving up in to familiar slots on the show.  Ann Curry is replacing Vieira in the co-anchor seat and Natalie Morales takes over as the news reader on Today.

Paula Abdul Joins Simon Cowell as Judge on ‘The X Factor’

May 8th, 2011 No comments

Another one of those really worst kept secrets.  Negotiations were going well, then not going well, CBS was holding Paula Abdul to her contract which gave her the opportunity to create more content for that network following the limited run of her reality show Live to Dance.  That show lived to die quickly on CBS.  But Paula probably did the right thing, turning away from that agreement to join The X Factor on FOX.Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell at the Los Angeles taping of 'The X Factor'

Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell at the Los Angeles taping of ‘The X Factor’

Production on  The X Factor started today.  And Paula Abdul was on hand to greet the contestants and make the announcement of her return to her buddy Simon Cowell along with fellow judges L.A. Reid and Cheryl Cole.  On her reunion with Simon today, Paula said during today’s announcement that “I am here.  It’s awkward and wonderful at the same time” she went on to say.

Now the full judges panel is in place.  And the hosts of The X Factor were announced as well as British personality Steve Jones and former Pussycat Dolls member Nicole Sherzinger will hold down that role.

“Na na na na, hey, hey, hey…goodbye” Los Angeles Lakers (Videos)

May 8th, 2011 No comments

So who are these six naked white guys in this picture?

Read on, my Lakers fans, read on.

Lots of users from Los Angeles log on to RealTVCritics.com and a lot of basketball fans are in mourning.  After watching ABC’s coverage of the Los Angeles Lakers most embarrassing moments in the history of the most so called respected franchise.

Well that label respected comes off their brand as of a few minutes ago.

It’s even hard to put up the score.  The Dallas Mavericks, winners of 50 games per season for what the last 10 years, totally waxed the Lakers in four straight games winning today and now are headed to the Western Conference Championship.  The Los Angeles Lakers just came completely apart today.  And did a lot of damage to the team after two Lakers players got tossed from the game because their team lost like losers, not losing like the champions that they claim to be.

steamLamar Odom, the now full time reality television star, got thrown out of today’s games.  Frustration.  Cheap shot on Dirk Nowitzki, and he was gone.  Gone as a loser, not as the championship mentality that is the Los Angeles Lakers.  Yeah he will be suspended for a few games at the start of next season.  That’s if he’s still with the Lakers.

Then there’s Andrew Bynum, who could find himself playing in Cleveland next year, was thrown out of the game as well.  He took a real cheap shot at reserve guard J.J. Berea that will cost him  a few bucks and probably 5 to 10 games missed next season as well.

The summer vacation has begun for the Los Angeles Lakers.  And well deserved.  Watching them on ABC-TV today, well I was watching a few past episodes of Crime Scene Investigation because the Lakers were down some 20 or so points at halftime.

Steam said it back in November of 1969.  “Na, na, na, na, hey, hey, hey, goodbye,” to the Los Angeles Lakers.  Oh yeah, this was the second worst defeat in Los Angeles Lakers history.  Dallas Mavericks 120 to the Lakers 86.

Bad day to watch TV today in L.A.
