New York Post Has Katie Couric Replacing Meredith Vieira on ‘The Today Show’…Well that’s a surprise. Has Leslie Moonves lost his mind? Don’t you think Katie Couric should be replacing pretty much everybody on that boring morning program over at CBS?
I don’t get it I really don’t get it unless it’s one of those famous, well thought out maneuvers to keep Katie making that 15 mill a year she’s bringing in as the third nighttime news show out of, well only three nighttime news show.
The New York Post has Meredith Vieira headed to spend more time with her family and leaving ‘The Today Show’ with Katie Couric on the way back to her old stomping grounds. And Jeff Zucker, who is leaving NBC soon as their big chief, wants to do the deal before he leaves.
Meredith Vieira and Chris Rock
Earth to Katie! Earth to Katie! Never take a job from a guy who is leaving the company.
But Les Moonves and Katie seem to get along pretty well so this is not a done deal. And I just don’t see the Meredith Vieira wanting to spend more time with her kids as a reason to leave the plum morning show although her husband has had two rounds with colon cancer so anything is possible.
And with ‘Good Morning America’ creeping up on ‘Today’ this could be the jolt NBC needs to help out the network. I just can’t imagine why Moonves, the big guy over at CBS, could not take the chance and put Katie on in the morning. The ‘Early Show’ on CBS is just awful and could use the boost.
Described as “Cheesy, Corny” ‘Undercovers’ Fading to Canceled Bin?…I have to admit I haven’t watched this show so I’m only going on the comments of others who have seen the new NBC drama ‘Undercovers’ so i shouldn’t really be writing about this program.
That’s if I didn’t have several people trashing the show after two episodes that were described as “cheesy and corny” putting it in an area that might not have long to go on my DVR.
The network put a lot of solid marketing behind this show featuring the too damn good looking Boris Kodjoe and an even more spectacular, truly hot English actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw who could be headed back overseas after NBC figures out the future of this show.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Boris Kodjoe, 'Undercovers'
‘Undercovers’ was supposed to be a breakout hit featuring two African American leads that NBC and other networks were looking to see whether minorities can bring in a mainstream audience and hopefully more ethnic based viewers but it doesn’t seem to be working. Most minority roles on current network television are supporting at best especially in the drama category and ‘Undercovers’ barely beat out ‘America’s Next Top Model’ on The CW which means this show could have canceled written all over it after such a poor performance.
Too bad. Both Kodjoe and Mbatha-Raw seemed safe enough for mainstream television but I still think America is not ready to see black people all over each other in the bedroom which was part of the basis for the spy drama. Plus African Americans don’t like ‘cheesy and corny’ in their TV diet. Either hard core law and crime dramas for men and reality fare with female performers for women.
Cause the prices are about to drop faster than Congress’s approval ratings. And the only thing lower than that could be the cost of flat screen televisions which are expected to be extremely favorable this holiday season.
And why not. Just about everyone has a flat screen and there are so many of them out there that there’s a glut of them on the market. I just bought one, an LG and the price which at most stores is about $630 I got for $450 and that to me was a steal.
Prices could drop as far as 15% off of costs from 2009. Makers of flat screens produced a ton during the World Cup soccer matches and of course they read the market wrong because nobody bought them and they are stacked up at your local retailer.
I just might buy another one for my bathroom. And I get the feeling that prices will stay low for a long time.
Anderson Cooper Looking at Hosting a Daytime Talk Show…Why? I dunno. His show on the constantly audience losing CNN isn’t doing very well so I guess that qualifies him to do a daytime talk show.
Really I like Anderson Cooper. I just think he’s way out of place on CNN and doing a daytime talk show, placed up against the likes of ‘Entertainment Tonight’ and ‘Access Hollywood’ which is the plan could prove pretty difficult challenge.
James Hibberd over at ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ says a deal is in the works to have Anderson Cooper not only continue his hosting duties at ‘Anderson Cooper 360′ but make room for him to produce a daily talk show in syndication.
It would be your typical daily talk program with topics including celebrities, social issues and things that make you want to think about the topics of the day. So that will be a snoozer. And is expected to launch next fall when the field of daytime talk programs is wide open with Oprah leaving the genre.
Cooper has been rumored to take over for Regis Philbin should he retire from ‘Regis and Kelly’ which I think would be a perfect place for him. This show? Uh, I don’t get it but I thought ‘Lone Star’ would work and now that show is canceled so we’ll see.
‘Last Comic Standing’ Comedian/Judge Dies of Overdose…Greg Giraldo had troubles with substance abuse and was pretty open about his issues with drugs. He was even about to perform at the New York Recovery Rally in New York before he was found in his hotel room several days ago after overdosing accidentally on prescription drugs.
Greg Giraldo passed away at the age of 44 years of age. Sad because he was the father of three, was a smart guy as he was a Harvard educated attorney before he turned to stand up comedy.
Greg Giraldo and Jim Norton
A regular on ‘Late Night for Conan O’Brien’ and ‘The Howard Stern Show,’Giraldo was one of the roasters who beat up David Hasselhoff on Comedy Central recently.
Friend and comedian Jim Norton made the announcement on his Twitter page and the photo is with Giraldo and Norton. Here’s what Norton said…
“Greg Giraldo passed away today. This is the last photo of us together, taken June 28 at Noam’s wedding. RIP buddy.”
‘Australia’s Next Top’ Model Winner is…OOOPS!!!! And we thought only American’s could pick the wrong winner, right? Delaware picks a witch for the Senate and New Yorkers still pick Charlie Rangel. Only in America!!! Only in America!!!
OK enough of this political talk. Sorry for the digression.
Amanda Ware (the real winner), Kelsey Martinovich (now the loser) and host Sarah Murdoch
Australia has their version ‘Next Top Model’ and something happened backstage where the host was given the wrong information and named the runner up as winner and the winner as runner up.
Count those hanging chads, Florida, count those hanging chads.
Sorry again for the political digression. But it’s election time.
So you take a look at the video for yourself. It’s pretty embarrassing for the show’s host who shall remain nameless except for the picture caption. And the winners, well let’s say that both weigh in at about 175 pounds combined.
What an awful mistake if that’s what it was. If it was a stunt to get publicity for the show it sure as hell worked. But with one reality show contestant recently putting a bullet in her head and another jumping off a bridge to his death, screwing around with people’s emotions and doing something stupid like this for publicity, well sucks.
‘Mike & Molly’…Very Funny… And smart. Comedies have a hard time these days on television. Monday nights on CBS is making it better. We already give ‘Two and a Half Men’ a ‘C’ grade since the writing over the last couple of years is a bit stale but the new entry following that hit series is ‘Mike and Molly’ which creator Chuck Lorre seems to have done it again.
It’s very funny. Lots of slick one liners, great cast that fit in every way for their character’s personalities and easy to watch as this is middle America comedy done really well.
Melissa McCarthy and Billy Gardell, 'Mike & Molly'
‘Mike’ is Billy Gardell, who you might remember from ‘My Name is Earl,’ and Melissa McCarthy is ‘Molly’ who both meet at an ‘Overeaters’ class and begin dating. Both are perfect in their roles as a cop and a school teacher. The one liners are superb. Swoosie Kurtz is Molly’s mom and is a hard drinking character on the show.
When Mike comes for his first date with Molly he’s wearing this lime and dark green sweater with a red shirt underneath.
“Nice sweater” she asks Mike. Was it a gift?”
“No” Mike says.
“Really” says Swoosie. You paid for that?”
Lots of similar comedic content that just makes this a safe but close to the line writing that makes you want to laugh. A lot. A lot like ‘Two and a Half Men’ did at the beginning of that series.
There’s something really down to earth about ‘Mike & Molly’ so for a season of new comedies that look relatively so-so you might want to take 30 minutes and watch this one.
‘Lone Star’ was one of those critically acclaimed pilots that after watching you were truly engaged and wanted to see what was going to happen next. Quality cast, great plot, great writing and as in most well reviewed TV shows no one seemed interested in watching.
Robert Allen and David Keith in 'Lone Star'
I have to admit myself that after watching the pilot on a JetBlue flight, I didn’t even turn on the second episode.
So FOX has decided to halt production on the show that many thought would be a hit. Man has quality flown out the window or what? FOX isn’t even going to run the other three episodes that were produced and have decided to drop in the premiere of ‘Lie to Me’ in hopes of saving the start new television series that does not look pretty for the network.
According to the first week’s ratings, FOX has lost 16% of its audience when comparing its viewers to last year.
‘Lone Star’s plot was pretty cool. A con man and his father doing what they do best, conning people. But the kid was living a double life, married to two women and working both ends to ripoff everyone in his sight. The pilot was solid. People just didn’t watch it and that’s too bad. Jon Voight was his usual awesome, David Keith was perfect in his role as the dad of Robert Allen’s character James Wolk.
Another Celebrity Overdose, This Time ‘Snooki’s Huge Alcohol Binge…I guess we should call her a celebrity, ya think? Well whatever you want to call her the star of MTV’s ‘Jersey Shore’ was hospitalized in Miami during a taping of the show that has pretty much relaunched the cable network.
Snooki and Pauly D
Ratings for the show have been on the rise so much that it even surpasses some network shows and you can bet this episode would have been the biggest for viewers as Snooki was apparently so drunk that she had to be carried out of a Miami nightclub.
Keep reading about why this “would have been the biggest episode” because there’s more to the story.
Miss Snooki was hospitalized after the binge according to RadarOnline. Here’s the thing. This happened in May and this is just coming out as the producers that carried her out of ‘Dream’ nightclub decided not to air this incident in an upcoming episode.
Maybe this was a bit much for even MTV viewers. The idiot producers though think airing one cast member punching a female in the face makes better television, huh. Or maybe they wouldn’t want to lower the level of people who watch that show to think that’s the way life is in Miami.
RadarOnline says Snooki was rushed to the hospital for a case of alcohol poisoning.
MTV will probably increase her per episode compensation. This is great TV right, you yuk yuks!
Yet why am I complaining. If you watch anything on MTV it’s a train wreck.
Russell Crowe Looks To Do Film Version of TV’s ‘The Equalizer’ …”McCall! Robert McCall!” That’s the way the late Edward Woodward, who was the coolest, old dude that used to smack around criminals, would identify himself during the 1980’s series ‘The Equalizer.’
It was a bit gritty and lasted only four years but it looks like Russell Crowe will be doing a do-0ver on the 1980’s television series according to Jay Fernandez and Borys Kit over at The Hollywood Reporter.
With Russell Crowe on board this will be a big time production and the director lined up to work with Crowe is Paul Haggis who wrote the movie ‘Quantum of Solace’ and several television shows including “Walker: Texas Ranger,’ ‘L.A. Law,’ and ‘thirtysomething.’
The plot of ‘The Equalizer’ was pretty simple as ‘Robert McCall,’ a former spy, goes out to help people who needed his services. He put an ad in the New York Times that read “Got a Problem? Odds against you? Call the Equalizer.”
Edward Woodward as 'The Equalizer'
And then it was on! This old white dude would run around New York eliminating drug dealers, murderers, kidnappers, scammers and everyone else that was causing mayhem for the citizens of that city.
Great plot that worked very well and should be a great movie. For you old schoolers check out the opening theme to ‘The Equalizer.’
